Horse Racing betting tips: General Medrano to score at Huntingdon

Three of the four scheduled race meetings across Britain and Ireland on Sunday are over jumps, and there is an eight-race evening all-weather card from Newcastle.

They are first off at Leopardstown after the meeting passed an inspection on Saturday. The two British jumps cards are from Doncaster and Huntingdon.

Racing Post tipster Dave Randall outlines his best bets from the Sunday action.

Dave Randall's tips

2.40 Doncaster - Ernest Grey @ 7/1
2.40 Doncaster - Kadex @ 10/1
3.40 Huntingdon - General Medrano @ 5/1

2.40 Doncaster - Ernest Grey @ 7/1

Hopefully all eight runners will face the starter in the Class 4 3m novices' handicap chase from Doncaster on Sunday afternoon, as there are a couple of horses who may represent some each-way value.

The first selection is ERNEST GREY for Alan King, who is 22-134 (16%) with his runners over fences at Doncaster, and Tom Cannon is continuing his association in the saddle, a jockey who is 40-273 (15%) when riding over fences for the yard. King is 3-17 in the past 14 days.

Ernest Grey built on his respectable first start over fences on his seasonal reappearance at Wetherby in November, when only having to be pushed out to win over this 3m trip at Southwell in January from a 4lb lower mark, but the progression then stalled with a below-par effort at right-handed Kempton in February.

His sole win racing right-handed came in a Punchestown bumper on his debut for Colin Bowe in Ireland on heavy ground in March 2021, and he is 3-9 racing left-handed over obstacles, so the switch to this track is likely to be of some benefit.

The son of Walk In The Park is already a winner over an extended 3m over hurdles on this course and King also reaches for a first-time visor in an attempt to sharpen him up. King is 3-20 (15% +£14) with all of his runners who wore a first-time visor over fences since 2014.

The seven-year-old is 3-3 at this time of year, 2-9 in this class and 2-6 on good to soft ground. He has enough going for him to warrant an interest against the likely favourite Margaret's Legacy, who makes some appeal on form off this mark, but is as yet unproven over this trip.

Dave Randall's tip:

Ernest Grey @ 7/1 - 1pt each-way

2.40 Doncaster - Kadex @ 10/1

The second each-way suggestion in the Class 4 3m novices' handicap chase from Doncaster is forecast to be sent off at a slightly bigger price than Ernest Grey at double-figure odds.

KADEX is representing Lucy Wadham, who is 4-25 (16% +£33.75) with her runners over fences at Doncaster, and she is 4-11 (36%) in the past 14 days. Gavin Sheehan is taking over in the saddle and he is 4-18 (22%) when riding over fences at this course and 1-2 when riding over fences for Wadham.

The six-year-old registered a Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 110 when winning his second chasing start over slightly further on good to soft ground at Plumpton in October and an RPR of 113 when almost following up over 3m at Fakenham the following month.

The wheels came off the wagon when pulling up back at Fakenham and Plumpton in December and January, but he has had a small break since, and he can't be discounted off a mark of 104 in receipt of upwards of 5lb all-round, if Wadham can fix the problems that have emerged with his jumping.

She is reaching for first-time cheekpieces to sharpen him up and Wadham is 2-12 with all of her runners who wore first-time cheekpieces over fences since 2014.

Eight runners are also set to go to post in the Class 3 2m4f handicap chase at Huntingdon later on Sunday afternoon and GENERAL MEDRANO is another horse worth backing each-way.

The selection is representing Emma Lavelle, who is 2-9 (22%) in the past 14 days, and 16-86 (19%) with her runners over fences at Huntingdon.

Tom Bellamy is 38-224 (17%) when riding for Lavelle over fences and 7-40 (18%) when riding over fences at Huntingdon, including when steering General Medrano to victory on this course in October.

The seven-year-old is 2-5 over fences and registered an RPR of 141 when second over just shy of this trip at Plumpton in November and, following a lesser effort at Kempton in December, took a step back in the right direction when fourth at Sandown in January.

The winner Kotmask has franked the form by following up from a 7lb higher mark and General Medrano has decent claims off a 2lb lower mark of 132, returning to this course and stepping back up in trip.
