It's the turn of the fillies to star on 1000 Guineas day at Newmarket on Sunday and the big race looks wide open, while there could be Oaks clues in the Pretty Polly Stakes as well.
The latest horse racing betting tips for Sunday's big card at Newmarket from the Racing Post's Gary Savage are below.
1.50 Newmarket - Friendly Soul @ 13/2
3.00 Newmarket - Berkshire Rocco @ 8/1
3.40 Newmarket - Sacred Angel @ 50/1
1.50 Newmarket - Friendly Soul @ 13/2
A handicap winner, albeit an absurdly impressive one, is crying to be taken on as a short-priced favourite for a Listed contest, and as long as all eight stand their ground, the race has a nice each-way shape.
The Gosdens' record in this race is outstanding. They have not only won six of the last 10, but had placed runners in three of the other four runnings, so it's fair to say they have the right type of filly for this contest.
Of their two, well-related Friendly Soul looks the most likely to put it up to the favourite, being open to tons of improvement after only one start so far.
She was always well-positioned on her debut at Kempton, but did everything smoothly and was comfortably on top at the line in a field of similarly well-bred fillies.
That was over a mile, and as a big filly she would look to have plenty of improvement to come this year, which is backed up by her pedigree.
She is a half-sister to three Group One winners, who all improved with age.
Two of them, like their dam, didn't make their debuts until they were three, so the fact that this one was able to make a winning debut at two, together with the Gosdens' outstanding race record, makes Friendly Soul a cracking each-way bet.
3.00 Newmarket - Berkshire Rocco @ 8/1
The 2023 contest could provide the key to this competitive staying handicap contest, with last year's beaten favourite Berkshire Rocco fancied to atone for his lacklustre display.
The first three home last year re-oppose. Winner HMS President is racing off a career-high mark at the age of seven, while dead-heater for second, Adjuvant, is 5lb higher and with a couple of ignominious hurdle starts behind him.
Fellow dead-heater Torcello is unlikely to get his preferred soft conditions, so Berkshire Rocco, who was sent off 5/1 favourite when trailing that trio home by around seven lengths last May, gets a 6lb pull with Torcello and the better ground which suits him.
He is also 12lb better off with both Adjuvant and HMS President, which gives him a sound theoretical chance and the better ground should also be in his favour.
3.40 Newmarket - Sacred Angel @ 50/1
With the absence of Opera Singer, the 1000 Guineas has an open look and with only one winning favourite in the past 10 years and four places available, it's worth taking a chance on something at double figures.
With horses reaching the first four at prices of 22/1, 25/1, 33/1 (x3) and 100/1, as well as 66/1 winner Billesdon Brook in just the last six years, big prices are not to be shunned.
Being exposed as theoretically not quite good enough for this level, especially after plenty of 2yo starts, (Billesdon Brook ran eight times as a juvenile), is what characterises the big-priced place-getters and Charlie Johnston's filly, Sacred Angel, fits the bill.
Having beaten recent Nell Gwyn winner Pretty Crystal comfortably in the Group Three Princess Margaret in July on her third start, her last two runs were a fourth on unsuitably soft ground at Deauville and a solid third behind Porta Fortuna in the Cheveley Park at this course.
She was a bit keen, then actually outpaced a couple of furlongs out over six furlongs that day, and did well to keep going as strongly as she did.
She is related to a 1m2f winner and with her rating putting her right in the mix she's worth backing each-way.
