The Achilles Stakes (1.15) kicks off the action at Haydock and it provides a good opportunity for the classy Equilateral to build on a superb effort over course and distance on his last start.
EQUILATERAL was beaten just a length on that occasion by the smart winner Dramatised in the Temple Stakes and did well to pick off his rivals for second late after having to wait for a gap.
The fact he bagged the stands’ side rail on a day when it paid to race on that wing of the track might suggest he was flattered.
But he still beat all bar one of his rivals on his side and he is again drawn high in stall ten. If the bias is in play again, he should be well placed to cash in.
Equilateral regularly runs in stronger races and his last three outings have been in Group company. This drop to a Listed event will help and he should be capable of taking advantage.
The Reverence Handicap (1.50) is competitive, but MR WAGYU ran a stormer at Epsom last week and appears to be hitting top form. He is a strong fancy to get back to winning ways.
Mr Wagyu has dropped to a mark 4lb lower than when last successful at the Curragh a year ago and looked right back to form on Derby day last week.
He was drawn wide and had to race on the outside throughout, but still kept on well to finish a length-and-a-quarter-third.
He did clearly best of those who raced up with the pace in a contest that was run at a solid gallop throughout and was beaten only by two horses who were ridden more patiently.
Mr Wagyu is a dual course-and-distance winner who loves quick ground and should be hard to catch from stall 11. The stands’ side has been the place to be here recently and 11 is ideal.

The Lester Piggott Stakes (3.00) is a superb Group 3 contest and favourite Modaara will be popular after her 13-length win at Kempton last time.
However, that was a weak race and she faces some classy rivals here, so it’s worth taking her on with last year’s Park Hill winner MIMIKYU.
She looked like a top-class filly in the making when landing that Group 2 contest at Doncaster and can be forgiven her defeat in a hot race on Champions Day at Ascot next time.
That came at the end of a long season against some top-class rivals and she never got into it.
Mimikyu returned from a winter break to finish second in the Group 3 Bronte Cup at York last month and she was beaten only a short-head by winner River Of Stars after looking set to win.
She was conceding weight and may have found the lack of a recent run catching her out.
The front three were nicely clear of the fourth and Mimikyu should have no problem with the drop back to 1m4f.
Her sister, Journey, was effective at this trip and improved with age, so I’m expecting Mimikyu to do the same as her sibling. If she does, she should outclass these rivals.
1.15 Haydock - Equilateral @ 3/1
1.50 Haydock - Mr Wagyu @ 3/1
3.00 Haydock - Mimikyu @ 7/2
