Derby day at Epsom is always a highlight in the calendar and Robbie Wilders from the Racing Post provides four bets at the meeting, including two in the Classic.

The brilliance of Frankie Dettori on Oaks day means we now have a new Derby favourite in his mount Arrest.

However, Arrest is ill deserving of a short price in the Derby as his Chester form doesn't amount to much and the odds are more reflective of his connections.

The same is true of long-time ante-post market leader Auguste Rodin, who returned with a flop in the 2,000 Guineas.

That would be enough to turn me off Auguste Rodin at a short price regardless of the fact his juvenile form has failed to work out particularly well.

He is bypassed for two colts I consider to have been overlooked in DUBAI MILE and SPREWELL. Both are enticing each-way prices with bet365 paying four places.

Dubai Mile beat Arrest as a juvenile in the Group1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, yet he is available at almost five times the price despite the fact he ran a race full of promise over an inadequate mile when fifth in the Guineas on his comeback.

It was always the plan for Dubai Mile to warm up for Epsom at Newmarket he is expected to relish the step up to 1m4f. 

Sprewell's form is also being underestimated. The Churchill colt looked a top-notcher when readily pulling clear of Up And Under in the Derby Trial at Leopardstown last time, stamping greater authority on the second than White Birch did in the Ballysax Stakes.

White Birch would have gone close to winning the Dante in another couple of strides and the Irish Classic trial form is well worth respecting.

The fact Sprewell encounters a sound surface for the first time could deter punters. However, Sprewell’s sire loved quick terrain and his dam produced her best effort on firm ground in a Canadian Grade 1.

2.10 Epsom - Roman Mist @ 11/2

Next up on Derby day is the Princess Elizabeth Stakes and ROMAN MIST is fancied to upset the two fillies who head the betting in Prosperous Voyage and Potapova.

Despite Prosperous Voyage’s Group 1 success at three, her efforts away from Newmarket are essentially of Group 3 standard, while it is a huge concern that Potapova pulled up with an irregular heartbeat at Goodwood 28 days ago.

Roman Mist was the filly to take advantage that day at Goodwood and, while she was well positioned to strike in a slowly run race, the heavy surface was alien to her (withdrawn due to slow ground twice in the past) and the form is worth respecting.

The third easily landed a Listed race next time and the runner-up was a former Group 1-winning juvenile who had clearly benefited from a change of stables.

So did Roman Mist on her first start for Archie Watson and she can take another step forward.

4.30 Epsom - Sheer Rocks @ 8/1

It is an obvious concern that SHEER ROCKS finished last of eight on his sole run at Epsom, but that was in a Classic Trial and he was a baby then.

I'm inclined to give him another chance each-way back at this course in the 1m4f handicap as he seems to have matured.

Sheer Rocks was gelded this summer and that clearly sparked an improvement as he made a winning return as a four-year-old at Ascot recently.

A 2lb rise for that looks workable and the switch to better ground should not inconvenience him, while his trainer, Eve Johnson Houghton, could hardly be in better form.
