Horse racing tips: Captain Haddock, Woven & Espor De Romay backed to go well on Sunday

There's two excellent British meetings on Sunday, flat at Doncaster and jumps at Ascot, and  the Racing Post's Gary Savage has found some potential bets.

Gary Savage's tips

1.20 Doncaster - Captain Haddock @7/2
3.05 Doncaster - Woven @ 15/2
2.45 Ascot - Kourosh @7/2
5.05 Ascot - Espoir De Romay @ 14/1

1.20 Doncaster - Captain Haddock @ 7/2

This is a race that often has an unexposed four-year-old as favourite, but they haven't shone very often, with the last winner from that generation in 2014, and likely favourite Dubai Crystal, under the always well-backed Simon Walker, is worth opposing.

Undoubtedly a top amateur, Walker has been beaten on a number of short-priced favourites in this race and I fancy Henry Main to get the job done on CAPTAIN HADDOCK in his third attempt at this race.

On very similar ground on last season's seasonal debut, he got within half a length at the line after he and Henry Main found themselves miles out of their ground as they entered the straight.

His form wasn't great afterwards, but as a result he is 6lb lower than last year, and a whopping 20lb better off with last year's fourth Two Brothers who finished just behind him.

Considering he was third in this race off 14lb higher on unsuitably soft ground in 2022 and close up on his 2021 reappearance also in an amateur's contest it seems fair to suggest he will have been well prepared for this contest in an attempt to give trainer Heather Main's son Henry a rare winner.

Gary Savage's tip:

Captain Haddock @ 7/2- 1pt win

3.05 Doncaster - Woven @ 15/2

It's hardly an original approach but horses that have run well at the meeting before, and on their first start of the season, really are the way to go at this meeting and having been 2nd, 2nd and 1st in his last three season openers, WOVEN fits the bill nicely.

Those last two seasonal debuts came here, in this race in 2022 and in May last year under today's jockey Phil Dennis when he ran out the cosy winner of a Class 3 off 3lb lower.

He was 2lb higher when second in this race on good ground in 2022 but a soft surface brings out the best in him, as does Doncaster where he has never failed to place in four outings, and this race should set up perfectly for his closing style.

Woven @ 15/2 - 1pt win

2.45 Ascot - Kourosh @7 /2

The 3.4mm of rain that fell on Saturday afternoon shouldn't prevent the ground being some of the quickest encountered all winter, as the going stick readings on Saturday morning indicated it will be quicker than it has been all jumps season.

Dan Skelton has his team in rude health and punters shouldn't be put off by the selection's last run in heavy ground at Chepstow where he travelled strongly before finding little off the bridle.

The ground rather than a lack of ability is what cost him on that occasion and this promises to be a very different test on, at worst, good to soft ground. His trainer spoke of him in glowing terms after his bloodless Wetherby success and his mark of 119 looks a gift with a well-run 2m here looking ideal.

Kourosh @ 7/2 - 1pt win

5.05 Ascot - Espoir De Romay @ 14/1

Another who is poised to return to form on the appreciably better going is Kim Bailey's ten-year-old who has been struggling with conditions this winter.

As a result he is now 7lb lower than when behind a runaway winner in this contest last year, when making only his second start of a truncated campaign.

Last year's race looked a better one than this renewal, with several unexposed sorts from top yards, and I fancy ESPOIR DE ROMAY to at least run well enough to get placed in this ordinary contest for the track.

Espoir De Romay @ 14/1 - 1pt each-way

Gary Savage's tips

1.20 Doncaster - Captain Haddock @ 7/2
3.05 Doncaster - Woven @ 15/2
2.45 Ascot - Kourosh @ 7/2
5.05 Ascot - Espoir De Romay @ 14/1
