Horse Racing betting tips: Bank on Balding to bag a big-race double

It’s Winter Derby day at Southwell on Saturday as the race takes place at the Nottinghamshire venue for the first time and it’s live on ITV4. Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway returns to mark your card.

2.45 Southwell - The Bell Conductor @ 33/1

The Listed Hever Sprint Stakes (2.45) kicks off the all-weather action and there could be a surprise in store because The Bell Conductor looks overpriced in comparison to these rivals.

He might be seven years old, but that doesn’t mean he can’t still be improving and he has run only 21 times, which isn’t a lot for a sprinter. He is 5-10 on the all-weather and 4-6 at Southwell, with his other win on sand coming on Tapeta at Newcastle. He likes the surface.

That could count for plenty and The Bell Conductor has run only twice for new trainer Craig Lidster, taking a massive step forward on his below-par debut for the yard at this track in December when running away with a course-and-distance handicap in a good time last time.

This is a much stronger race, but The Bell Conductor’s ability on this surface might bring him closer to the form horses and, at what will be a big price, he rates a solid each-way bet.

3.20 Southwell - Eydon @ 6/1

The Winter Derby (3.20) is the feature and Lord North will be a warm order to win the race for the second time in as many years. However, he has the Dubai Turf at Meydan next month as his big target and is unlikely to be fully wound up on his first start since that race last year.

He is worth taking on at a short price and Military Order, the second favourite, also comes here with question marks hanging over him after a defeat at this course on his last outing.

It’s therefore worth taking a chance on Eydon, who hasn’t been seen since finishing fourth in the 2,000 Guineas two years ago, but has now joined Andrew Balding’s team and there aren’t many trainers better than him. He can be trusted to have Eydon ready after a 665-day break.

The five-year-old was only two lengths behind the top-class Luxembourg in that Classic at Newmarket, so has strong form for this company, and if he can show it here he can win this.

Graeme Rodway's tip

Eydon @ 6/1 - 1pt win

4.30 Southwell - Cello @ 6/1

The 1m4f handicap (4.30) is a competitive race and it might be worth sticking with another Balding-trained runner who comes off a long layoff because Cello looks well handicapped.

The son of Intello made steady progress when last seen on the track, building on his sixth-place finishes on his first two starts with an easy victory at Kempton.

That was back in January last year and he has been off the track for 413 days since, but Cello recorded a good time when winning that Kempton contest and pulled three and a quarter lengths clear of the rest of the field. That was also his first run over this 1m4f distance.

He makes his handicap debut on his first start since gelding and is unexposed in comparison to these rivals. There is every chance he can make a winning reappearance for his top stable.
