Thurles Horse Racing Tips for Sunday

There's a mixture of graded races and competitive handicaps at Thurles on Sunday where the going is on the quick side.

Here are the latest horse racing betting tips for Sunday's card from the Racing Post's Gary Savage.

Sunday's Thurles Horse Racing Betting Tips and Odds

13:30 - Nara - 13/2
14:05 - Fil Dor - 5/1
14:35 - Whatsyourstatus -
14/1

13:30 - Nara - 13/2

The Grade 2 held at Cork in December looks to hold the key to this contest with the first two home, Only By Night and NARA, renewing rivalry (13:30).

There's no doubt Gavin Cromwell's mare was impressive when winning that day, but there are reasons for optimism that Henry De Bromhead's five-year-old can reverse the placings this afternoon.

The 5lb extra that Only By Night has to carry today wouldn't have been enough to change things that day, but the way that Nara rallied, and pulled clear of the rest of the field late on, makes the extra half mile today look in her favour.

The ground, good to yielding in places with no rain due, should suit her more than the favourite, who her trainer has been at pains to run on softer ground throughout her career.

It is hoped that the better surface, alongside this being her fourth start over fences, should also help Nara get her still-novicey jumping together, and if so she can put it up to the favourite.

14:05 - Fil Dor - 5/1

The Grade 2 Horse & Jockey Hotel Chase (14:05) has a tremendously open look to it, with only 7lb between nine of them on official ratings.

Most of the field look far from solid, however, and it can pay to keep things simple with FIL DOR who is suited by the course and going and has been running well this season.

Unlike a few of these making seasonal returns, or ideally wanting more give underfoot, Gordon Elliot's seven-year-old has already won a chase at the course this season under similar conditions and was beaten only by Ryanair candidate Jungle Boogie at Ascot last time.

He'll face nothing of that one's ability on Sunday and although he isn't as good as looked likely when he was second in the Triumph Hurdle, he has always known how to win, as a 6-22 record over obstacles testifies.

14:35 - Whatsyourstatus - 14/1

Gearoid O'Loughlin's 12-year-old WHATSYOURSTATUS hasn't had much racing in recent years, but is capable on his day. His return over hurdles at Navan in December caught the eye and should have set him up nicely for this extended 2m 5f handicap chase (14:35).

He will only run if conditions are suitable, and has been made a non-runner plenty of times in the last few seasons, but if he does line up he can get the job done as he did when winning at Clonmel in June 2023.

He is only 3lb higher today, having had only four starts since, and the only one of those outings that involved jumping fences was in a Cross-Country race at Cheltenham.

Sent off at 80-1 last time, he outran those odds, showing up well for a long way against much younger opposition. The third home has won since and Whatsyourstatus can go well here at an each-way price.
