The Everest: Date, venue, how to watch and history

Though it has only been around since 2017, The Everest has established itself as one of the richest races in the world and a much-coveted Australian sprinting crown.

The most recent running of The Everest in 2023 had a prize fund of $20m and once again in 2024 it is set to draw some of the best sprinters in the world to the Sydney venue.

The Everest date

The Everest will take place on Saturday 18th October 2025.

The Everest venue

The Everest takes place at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The track is located in the Eastern suburbs of the city, with the site leased to Australian Turf Club by the Commonwealth of Australia.

The Everest history

The Everest was inaugurated in 2017 as a weight for age Conditions race. Gaining entry to the race is not dissimilar to the Pegasus World Cup, with slots for sale in the 12-runner line-up.

The race is the feature contest at the Sydney Spring Carnival, preceding the major events that follow, including the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

The Everest most successful trainer

Joint handlers Peter & Paul Snowden won the first two renewals of The Everest with Redzel as a five and then six-year-old gelding. That feat has since been matched by Chris Waller, the Hall of Fame trainer having scored with Yes Yes Yes in 2019 and Nature Strip in 2021.

They remain the only training operations to win more than once.

The Everest most successful jockey

The irrepressible Kerrin McEvoy has won The Everest three times in its first seven years. He was on board for Redzel in 2017 and 2018 before partnering Classique Legend for trainer Les Bridge in 2020.

The three-time Melbourne Cup-winning pilot is the only rider to win The Everest more than once.

The Everest famous winners

Redzel famously won the first two renewals of the race, with the owning syndicate having come to an agreement with slotholder James Harron to use his spot in the gate for the first running.

The fastest time was recorded by the 2019 winner Yes Yes Yes, who completed in 1:07.32.

Nature Strip famously won this race in 2021 and added the King's Stand at Royal Ascot in 2022, while the most recent scorer was Think About It for trainer Joseph Pride and jockey Sam Clipperton.
