Here are the latest horse racing betting tips for Wednesday’s cards from Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway.
13:35 Sedgefield – Ridin Solo @ 7/4
14:25 Fairyhouse – Whimsy @ 11/2
16:45 Ludlow – Percussion @ 3/1
13:35 Sedgefield – Ridin Solo @ 7/4
The opening 2m4f maiden hurdle (13:35) at Sedgefield doesn’t look like a strong race for the grade and the one to beat is surely Ridin Solo, who has been in good form and can get off the mark.
The Donald McCain-trained gelding has a string of consistent efforts beside his name and his last two runs have been as good as any. He was beaten only a length and three-quarters into third over course and distance in December and was the same distance behind the winner at Catterick last time.
He finished only fifth in a bunch finish that day, but showed that he acts in the cheekpieces that are retained here and was disputing the lead at the last. It was only from there that he lost places.
That was also in handicap company and it was probably a much stronger race than this, so a reproduction of the form might be good enough for Ridin Solo to outclass a weak-looking field.
14:25 Fairyhouse – Whimsy @ 11/2
The 2m novice hurdle (14:25) at Fairyhouse is an interesting little race and the consistent Whimsy appears to have been found a good opportunity to break her maiden over hurdles.
Whimsy was rated 78 on the Flat and has transferred plenty of that ability to obstacles. Her best recent effort was a close second in a mares maiden hurdle at Galway in October and she confirmed that she remains in top form when beaten only a length and three-quarters at Cheltenham last time.
She beat only one rival home in third of four that day and it probably wasn’t a strong race, but jumped the last in front and was still in the lead a half-furlong out. It was only after that she faded.
The key to her chance might be heavy ground because she handled plenty of cut on the Flat and several of her rivals are unproven in such testing conditions. She can make that edge count.
16:45 Ludlow – Percussion @ 3/1
The 3m hunter chase (16:45) brings the curtain down on the card at Ludlow and Percussion looks capable of winning a race like this judging on his best form in handicaps over the last 12 months.
Percussion finished second in the Summer Cup at Uttoxeter in June and has been keeping hot company since. He finished down the field in the Grand Sefton at Aintree and the Tommy Whittle at Haydock, but those were much stronger races than this event and the drop in class could prove key.
The selection finished second in a hunter chase over course and distance last season and the return to this track is evidently in his favour. He might also benefit from a change in the headgear he is wearing.
Percussion sported a visor last time, but the cheekpieces and tonguestrap that he wore when second at this course last season return and this rates a golden opportunity for him to get his head in front.
