It's day one of Sandown's Tingle Creek Festival on Friday with a pair of Grade 2s, the Winter Novices' Hurdle and Esher Novices' Chase, the undoubted highlights of a six-race card at the Esher venue.
The latest horse racing betting tips from Racing Post tipster Robbie Wilders.
14:33 Sandown - Resplendent Grey @ 13/8
15:03 Sandown - Hoe Joly Smoke @ 5/2
15:35 Sandown - Fasol @ 9/4
14:33 Sandown - Resplendent Grey @ 13/8
Resplendent Grey has made an excellent transition to chasing and can notch a second success over fences in the Esher Novices’ Chase.
The Olly Murphy-trained six-year-old may have been inferior to a couple of these over hurdles, but he is a good jumper and shaped better than the result when a close second in a Listed contest at Cheltenham last time.
The winner controlled that slowly run affair from the front and the selection, barring a mistake at the second-last, was impressive at his fences but was simply given too much to do from his track position.
Now we know he stays the three-mile trip, the expectation is he will be ridden more prominently, and the prospect of softer conditions should do him no harm as his most impressive effort over hurdles came on such terrain.
15:03 Sandown - Hoe Joly Smoke @ 5/2
If Resplendent Grey gets the job done then that will pay a handsome compliment to Hoe Joly Smoke in the following 3m handicap chase for Dan and Harry Skelton.
Novices are always dangerous in this sort of race and Hoe Joly Smoke made a bright start to his chasing career at Uttoxeter when succumbing only to Resplendent Grey, who went on to frank the form at Cheltenham.
Hoe Joly Smoke moved nicely into contention that day before a mistake at the last cost him.
He reportedly took a good blow after the race, so seems certain to come forward from that appearance, and this lightly raced chaser is taken to up his game with a first-time tongue-tie fitted.
15:35 Sandown - Fasol @ 9/4
Fasol might just have needed his return when fancied at Cheltenham's November Meeting a few weeks ago and is worth granting another chance in the 2m novice handicap hurdle.
That should have knocked the freshness out of Fasol, who raced too keenly when fourth in that warm handicap, and it is surely only a matter of time before Paul Nicholls manages to extract a victory out of him in this sphere.
The four-year-old is rated 100 on the Flat and was sent off favourite to beat Greatwood runner-up Be Aware on his debut for the yard in a Newbury maiden hurdle this year.
Open to significant improvement as a hurdler, Fasol can capitalise on a potentially lenient rating of 108 if stripping fitter for his comeback.
