Royal Ascot Day 1 tips for Tuesday's racing

There are three Group 1 events on the opening day at Royal Ascot on Tuesday and the feature St James's Palace Stakes could be the race of the week.

Queen Anne Stakes tip

14:30 - Big Rock @ 11/2

The Queen Anne Stakes kicks off the five-day jamboree at Royal Ascot and the one to be on is BIG ROCK, who produced the mile performance of the season over course and distance last year.

Big Rock ran away with the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on that occasion and had the reopposing Facteur Cheval, who has since won a Group 1 of his own, toiling six lengths back in second.

Big Rock wasn’t at his best when beaten 15 lengths behind Audience in the Lockinge on his seasonal reappearance at Newbury, but he stumbled coming out of the stalls that day and had to work hard to reach his usual prominent position.

Those exertions took their toll late and he looked to need the run.

That was no more than a prep-race for a return to this track for this contest and trainer Maurizio Guarnieri has Christophe Soumillon taking over from Aurelien Lemaitre in the saddle here.

That is a huge plus and I’m not a subscriber to the belief that Big Rock must have soft going. He goes on good.

King Charles III Stakes tip

15:45 - Rogue Lightning @ 10/1

The King Charles III Stakes is the second Group 1 on the card and this can go to ROGUE LIGHTNING, who was a rapid improver last season and won well over course and distance in August.

The Tom Clover-trained four-year-old recorded a swift time on that occasion and showed further improvement when landing the Listed Scarborough Stakes at Doncaster last September.

However, his most eye-catching performance came in the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp in October.

He had to be dropped in from an unfavourable wide draw and met loads of trouble in running before flying home to miss out on the runner-up spot only narrowly. That proved he can mix it in Group 1s.

Rogue Lightning shaped like he was in need of the run when sixth on his seasonal return in the Temple Stakes at Haydock last month and is capable of taking a step forward with that behind him.

St James's Palace Stakes tip

16:25 - Rosallion @ 7/2

The St James's Palace Stakes is the feature and 2,000 Guineas winner Notable Speech is a warm favourite. However, he might have his work cut out to confirm that form with ROSALLION here.

Notable Speech was a length and a half ahead of Rosallion at Newmarket, but Sean Levey rode the race to beat City Of Troy that day and got caught out by a rival who was more patiently handled.

Rosallion proved himself a top-class colt when landing the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh last time out and he did remarkably well to win that day after racing keenly early in an unpromising position.

He is capable of even better form if getting more cover here from a good draw on the inside in stall one and the Hannon stable won this race with Canford Cliffs (2010) and Barney Roy (2017).

Both of them had been beaten in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket but improved here and Rosallion can too.

Ascot Stakes tip

17:05 - Kyle Of Lochalsh @ 16/1

Hughie Morrison knows how to saddle winners at Royal Ascot and big-race victories with Cill Rialaig, Sagramor, Pisco Sour, Arab Dawn and Quickthorn illustrate that he can mix it with the best here.

Morrison saddles the most interesting runner in the Ascot Stakes in the shape of KYLE OF LOCHALSH, who is improving and now comes here looking for a fourth victory in his last five starts.

The rapidly progressive four-year-old produced his best performance when bolting up in a 1m6f handicap at Salisbury on soft ground last month.

He travelled like he was in a class of his own that day and quickly put six and a half lengths between himself and the runner-up, smart hurdler Pawapuri.

A 10lb rise in the weights means that Kyle Of Lochalsh will need to find more, but he is still unexposed on turf, having won two of his four starts on the surface.

He is equally effective on any ground and might have enough improvement in the locker to give Morrison yet another big Royal Ascot success.
