Commonwealth Cup tip

15:05 – Jasour @ 11/2

The Commonwealth Cup (15:05) has been one of the best additions to the meeting since its inception in 2015 and Clive Cox won the race four years ago with Golden Horde. He might hold the key again with Jasour, who was at his best on fast ground last season and should improve for the quick surface.

He would probably have found the good to soft ground more testing than he would have liked in the trial for this race over course and distance last month, but it didn’t stop him running away with it by a length and three-quarters. The runner-up, Adaay In Devon, franked the form by winning at Sandown on Saturday.

Jasour was a class apart that day, travelling strongly and putting the race to bed with a good turn of foot to take his record under Jim Crowley to 2-2. It was a more mature performance than when he had disappointed on his last two outings as a juvenile and there is no doubt he has improved this winter.

He has a nice draw in stall five, close to favourites Inisherin and Elite Status, and is capable of tracking them before unleashing his potent turn of foot in the closing stages.

Coronation Stakes tip

15:45 – Porta Fortuna @ 7/1

The Coronation Stakes (15:45) is one of the best races of the week as last season’s star juvenile filly, Opera Singer, takes on the first three from Newmarket’s 1,000 Guineas last month.

Elmalka beat Porta Fortuna into second and Ramatuelle to third at Newmarket, but Porta Fortuna is fancied to reverse those places here. She was the only one of those three who went into the 1,000 Guineas without a run and should take a big step forward with that outing behind her.

Porta Fortuna was beaten only a neck behind Elmalka and has course form in her favour here. She won the Albany Stakes over 6f at this meeting last year and, while that was on the straight track and this race is on the round, it does at least prove that she is capable of coping with such a big occasion.

She loves fast ground, having recorded form figures reading 112 when firm appears in the description, and her sole defeat under such conditions was a narrow one in the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

Her turn of foot could be crucial in a race around a bend, where the key is quickening up late on.

Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes tip

16:25 – Sheer Rocks @ 20/1

The Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes (16:25) can go to Sheer Rocks, who has recorded two of his four highest Racing Post Ratings at this track and was a course-and-distance winner last season.

The Eve Johnson Houghton-trained gelding won well that day on soft ground, but his pedigree suggests he should be equally effective on quicker going and he won on good to firm at Epsom last June. That effort is his equal career best on RPRs, so the conditions shouldn’t be a problem here.

He is 2-3 since a gelding operation and remains open to further improvement, especially as he has been off the track for 349 days. There is a good chance he has progressed again at home in that time.

Sheer Rocks was successful on his debut as a juvenile in 2021 and has gone well fresh before, so the long absence isn’t a huge concern, and this will surely have been the target given his course record.
