Libertango is an opposable short-priced favourite in the Lowther Stakes that opens Thursday’s card at York.
I’m far from convinced the Albany Stakes she won was much of a race and she was beaten fair and square by Queen Mary runner-up Senorita Bonita in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes next time.
It is instead worth siding with the Joseph O’Brien-trained Star Of State. The daughter of the yard’s outstanding middle-distance horse Son Of Rest shaped with promise on her debut behind reopposing Livenka, who was at an experience advantage that day with two runs behind her.
Star Of State built on that initial outing with one of the most impressive maiden victories you’ll see, powering home for a front-running nine-length win at Leopardstown and pumping in a standout Racing Post Rating/Topspeed figure.
I’ll be supporting her until she’s beaten for the rest of the campaign and she tops my list for next month’s Cheveley Park.
16:10 York - Rhapsody @ 6/1
Morrophore is another early favourite I’m keen to oppose in the Galtres Stakes. We haven’t seen Morrophore in 215 days and her best performances have been on the all-weather.
She may yet prove as good on turf, but I’d like to see it first and ready preference is for Rhapsody.
William Haggas loves to target this meeting and Rhapsody is sitting on a career best once she gets a proper pace to chase over 1m4f.
She caught the eye when a staying-on fourth behind her stablemate Alobayyah on her return in the Kensington Palace, shaping as if she needed further than a mile.
That was the impression again when Rhapsody stepped up to 1m2f for the Meadow Court Stakes at the Curragh on her second run of the campaign.
The front-running winner Moody, who was pencilled in for the Yorkshire Oaks until a foot abscess thwarted that plan, controlled a steady tempo and Rhapsody’s fast-finishing second from a poor position is worth upgrading.
She is bred for 1m4f as a daughter of Ghaiyyath, whose dam was a stayer, and she’s one from one at the track. Everything is in place for a huge run.
16:45 York - Weleyff @ 5/1
Ed Bethell’s horses are in superb form and his Too Darn Hot colt Weleyff is a strong fancy in the 7f nursery.
Weleyff shaped well on his debut at Beverley in June and built on that by justifying favouritism with a ready success at Ayr, clearly learning on the job.
It was his penalty-carrying success in a Doncaster novice next time that made him of firm interest here.
He made every yard in a strong time and appears to have got in lightly off an opening mark of 86 for his handicap debut.
Bethell has entered Weleyff in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting, so he’s clearly well regarded and can secure his spot for Town Moor with victory at York.
