The latest horse racing betting tips for Tuesday’s card at Punchestown from Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway.
The first of five days at the Punchestown Festival takes place on Tuesday and there are three Grade 1s on a star-studded afternoon at the Irish track.
3:40 – King Of Kingsfield @ 28/1
5:25 – Gentleman De Mee @ 11/2
6:00 – Salvador Ziggy @ 25/1
3:40 – King Of Kingsfield @ 28/1
Gordon Elliott won the Champion Novice Hurdle (15:40) with 20/1 outsider Mighty Potter two years ago and may have a similar candidate to spring a surprise this season in the consistent KING OF KINGSFIELD.
The six-year-old has been running on ground that would have been softer than he prefers for most of the season and the one time he did encounter genuine yielding conditions it resulted in an easy victory over subsequent Grade 2 scorer Mirazur West at Leopardstown over Christmas.,
King Of Kingsfield was only seven lengths behind subsequent Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Slade Steel on soft ground in a Grade 1 at Leopardstown on his next outing and has a chance of reversing those places now that he encounters a better surface. All of his best form has come on decent going.
He needs to bounce back from a disappointing run in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham last time, when he went off a heavily backed 4/1 favourite, but again probably found conditions riding too slow for him and, provided the rain stays away, there is every chance he can upset the market principals.
5:25 – Gentleman De Mee @ 11/2
The Champion Chase (17:25) features a rematch between the first two home in the Cheltenham equivalent. It was Captain Guiness who beat GENTLEMAN DE MEE by a length and a half last time, but there is a good chance Gentleman De Mee can reverse the form, provided the ground doesn’t soften.
The eight-year-old is a spring horse who runs all of his best races at this time of the year and he has never been the strongest of finishers, so maybe Cheltenham’s uphill finish caught him out last time.
He is also often at his best when front-running on good ground and was ridden differently last time, when held up off the pace. A return to more prominent tactics at this track might bring about an improved effort from Gentleman De Mee and conditions are definitely forecast to be in his favour.
Paul Townend is a positive in the saddle and Gentleman De Mee can get back to winning ways.
6:00 – Salvador Ziggy @ 25/1
There have been some surprises in the Champion Novice Chase (18:00) in recent years and it’s worth taking a chance on their being another because SALVADOR ZIGGY looks to have been underestimated.
He simply loves good ground and was undone by testing conditions when pulled up in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last month. He had been trained for that race after 143 days off the track.
A reproduction of his best form last summer would give him a chance here. He was a course-and-distance winner on good to yielding going in June and went on to run a massive race when second in the Kerry National at Listowel under a big weight in September on his ideal ground.
Salvador Ziggy comes here a fresh horse, having run only once since last October, and could bounce back to form, provided conditions don’t deteriorate.
