There’s a competitive nine-race card at Wolverhampton on Friday with the action kicking off at 13:31 with an apprentice handicap.
Phill Anderson of the Racing Post supplies us with his best bets on the Wolverhampton card.
13:31 Wolverhampton - Amalou @ 11/4
16:25 Wolverhampton - Nolton Cross @ 5/1
17:55 Wolverhampton - Fancy Dancer @ 3/1
13:31 Wolverhampton - Amalou @ 11/4
Talented riders are worth their weight in gold in races confined to apprentice jockeys and Warren Fentiman, who has made a highly promising start to his career, has a good opportunity to get another success on the board in the opener sponsored by bet365.
He takes the ride on board Amalou who had shown very little in four runs prior to his success at Windsor last time out, where the first two home pulled a whopping eight lengths clear of the field.
That was only his second start in handicap company, with his first coming on seasonal reappearance in August and it’s fair to assume there’s plenty more to come from this three-year-old filly for a yard that excels with their handicappers.
A 4lb rise for the Windsor success looks like a lenient piece of handicapping given the margin back to the third and the horse she beat by a neck came in for significant market support before that contest.
Warren Fentiman should be able to get a prominent position from stall five, often a key factor around the tight turns of Wolverhampton and backing all of the jockey’s rides this campaign would have yielded a £33 profit to £1 level stakes, suggesting he tends to make the most of the opportunities he’s given.
16:25 Wolverhampton - Nolton Cross @ 5/1
Nolton Cross is a bit of an all-weather specialist and he may be worth chancing having shaped with some promise at Southwell recently.
Hugo Palmer’s gelding has gained six wins on the all-weather, all on Tapeta and four of those wins came at this venue (three over C&D).
He seems to save his best for this course and distance, as seen when winning here at the beginning of the year and he should come on for his recent return from a short break at Southwell.
That Southwell run was an effort worth marking up having not got the clearest of runs two furlongs out and he’s lurking on a dangerous handicap mark, 4lb below February’s course-and-distance success.
He faces some progressive sorts here but he looks like the value play back at his favourite venue.
17:55 Wolverhampton - Fancy Dancer @ 3/1
It often pays to be positioned prominently at Wolverhampton and one horse that may get his own way up front from stall one is Fancy Dancer.
He bounced back to form with a cracking effort over this course and distance in August and showed there was no fluke about that when hitting the crossbar again at Bath, beaten just a neck.
This previous course winner won’t mind a return to the all-weather and the 2lb rise for his last couple of efforts looks a little lenient.
He’s now 11lb below his last winning mark and the assignment of Luke Morris in the saddle is a positive jockey booking given that he rides this course well and has an 18 per cent strike-rate for the stable.
