Northumberland Plate odds: Hollie Doyle headlines on Trooper Bisdee

Newcastle is set fair for Northumberland Plate Day on Saturday, with a strong field of contenders assembling at Gosforth Park for the latest staging of the Pitmen's Derby.

A field of 20 have been declared for the 2024 running of the Northumberland Plate, with Geordie native Brian Ellison saddling top weight Tashkhan and dual course winner Onesmoothoperator as he bids for a first win in the famous contest.

Hollie Doyle will aim to win for a second time in three years as she partners Trooper Bisdee for Sir Mark Prescott, two years on from Trueshan's famous Newcastle win.

Here's a look at some of the leading contenders for Northumberland Plate glory at Newcastle.

Trooper Bisdee

Sir Mark Prescott's four-year-old is progressive this season and 2-2 on the term after wins at Nottingham and Pontefract over 2m/2m2f.

Scored with lots in hand last time and is likely to go well under 5lb penalty with 2022 winning rider Hollie Doyle on board for first time.

Zoffee

Has been round the houses in his career but now back with Hugo Palmer and made the perfect start second time around by winning the Chester Cup last month, showing a fine attitude.

Won the Vase over C&D in 2022, but only 1lb lower than when fading from a prominent position in this contest last June.

Duke Of Oxford

Kingman gelding is 4-9 on the all-weather, including a pair of 2m Kempton wins last winter.

Runner-up in the Marathon over C&D on All-Weather Finals Day in March and Chester Cup disappointment since is easy to forgive as trainer Michael Bell sets his sights back on the AW.

Grand Providence

Daughter of Nathaniel won a Cesarewitch Trial over 2m2f at Newmarket in September and has two good runs behind her this term, including close fifth in the Chester Cup.

Andrew Balding's Kempton Polytrack winner runs on Tapeta for the first time.

Onesmoothoperator

Regular here and has gone close over C&D. Too keen when Trueshan won this race in 2022, he prepared for this with a good second at Southwell in April and is entitled to be in the mix for his local trainer.

Yashin

The lone Irish raider, Jessica Harrington's Churchill gelding has twice been third behind Ascot Gold Cup winner Kyprios is Group 3/Listed company this term and is interesting on AW bow upped in trip with rider taking 3lb off.

Spartan Army

Alan King won this with Trueshan in 2022, a performance for the ages, and his latest contender is 3-4 on artificial surfaces with his sole setback seeing him third over C&D on Good Friday in AW Finals Marathon behind a well-handicapped winner.

Runs from the same mark now with Billy Loughnane booked.

Tashkhan

Second contender for Brian Ellison, this experienced turf performer stays further and was third in a Group 1 at Longchamp in the autumn when last spotted. Goes well fresh, but does have the burden of top weight.

True Legend

Second runner for Sir Mark Prescott, a course winner over shorter in May 2023 and arrives here after runner-up finishes at Lingfield and Goodwood on turf this term.

Tackles a new trip and the four-year-old could have more to give with Cieren Fallon on board.

Zealandia

Didn't fire in the Chester Cup last month coming back from a short break, but Ian Williams' charge was a C&D winner on New Year's Day and is a mere 3lb higher now.

Evaluation

Well behind Spartan Army at Southwell in February on stable bow, but got up late to win at Wolverhampton over this sort of trip in April on second start for Lucinda Russell and was fourth in the Vase on this card in 2022.

Howth

Took a while to break his duck but got his head in front over 1m6f at Wolverhampton in March and then ran a cracker in the AW Finals Marathon over C&D that same month.

Mick Appleby's ex-Ballydoyle inmate is not exposed at this trip and remains on a workable mark.

Forza Orta

Experienced turf handicapper, beaten around four lengths in the Chester Cup behind some of these last month.

Kevin Ryan's six-year-old is on a reasonable mark ahead of this first spin on an artificial surface.
