Newmarket Horse Racing Tips for Wednesday

The second day of the three-day Craven meeting takes place on Wednesday and the feature race is the Nell Gwyn Stakes at 3.35.

The latest horse racing betting tips for Wednesday’s Newmarket card from Racing Post tipster Robbie Wilders.

Wednesday’s Newmarket Horse Racing Betting Tips and Odds

13:50 – Orazio 4/1
15:00 – Claymore
40/1
15:35 – Pretty Crystal
16/1

13:50 – Orazio 4/1

There is plenty in Orazio’s favour in the 6f sprint that opens Newmarket’s card on Wednesday.

Orazio landed this in great style last season and looks well enough treated off 11lb higher given he has improved a good bit since. If he keeps progressing, as sprinters tend to at his age, he might even be able to mix it in Group company before long.

He had no real right to be sent off 3/1 joint favourite for the Listed Cammidge Trophy on his return as he was facing higher-rated types, but produced a fine effort in third after a gelding operation and the form is working out with the well-beaten fourth winning easily since.

A Racing Post Rating of 109 at Doncaster represents the second best performance of his life, and he represents a trainer-rider combination who have a good record at this course.

15:00 – Claymore 40/1

Plenty won’t be able to have Claymore in the Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes as he has a good bit to find on the figures, but he isn’t one I’d want to be laying at a massive price.

The value of a run at this time of year should not be understated and Claymore is hard-fit from racing on the all-weather.

Yes, he wasn’t at his best in handicap company at Newcastle last time, but that race was slowly run and he had no chance being held up. The way he finished was encouraging enough in the face of a stiff task and returning to turf, namely on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, looks a big plus for Claymore.

He bolted up in his maiden here and finished second to the top-class Native Trail in the Craven at this meeting two seasons ago.

15:35 – Pretty Crystal 16/1

I don’t have too many bets in Classic trials but Pretty Crystal takes the eye at decent odds in the Nell Gwyn.

When the prices allow, I like backing battle-hardened horses on the Rowley Mile in three-year-old races at this time of year as the slower-maturing types can be susceptible to finding the test coming too soon in their development.

Pretty Crystal was best known as a sprinter at two and was on the cusp of Group 3 level, but is definitely worth a try over an extra furlong given her finishing efforts over Ascot’s stiff 6f.

The step up in trip certainly looks a smart move given her breeding (by Dubawi and out of a mare whose best form was at 7f), and despite the fact she has a fair bit to find with the big players in the market, that does not preclude her from winning.

It is worth noting that a horse rated similarly overturned a hotpot who was rated a stone higher in a three-year-old conditions race on Tuesday’s card.
