The bet365 Craven meeting gets underway at Newmarket on Tuesday and the feature race is the mile handicap which takes place at 14:55.
The latest horse racing betting tips for Tuesday’s Newmarket card from Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway.
13:50 – Burning Cash 11/1
14:20 – Bravo Zulu 14/1
14:55 – Light Speed 28/1
13:50 – Burning Cash 11/1
The It's Never Ordinary At bet365 Handicap (13:50) is a cracking little sprint handicap and the one to be on is Burning Cash, who represents in-form trainer Paul Midgely and looks well handicapped.
Burning Cash split a pair of subsequent winners when beaten only half a length into second in a 5f handicap at Newcastle in February and that is evidently a strong piece of form. He runs off just 1lb higher here.
He needs to bounce back from a below-par effort back at Newcastle on his last outing, when he was beaten six and a half lengths by the winner in eighth. But he made a mess of the start that day and didn’t get a clear run when trying to weave his way through. It’s worth putting a line through the effort.
Burning Cash is racing off a mark 7lb lower than when recording his last victory in a handicap and that came on turf at Doncaster. The return to grass here will suit him and Jason Hart is a positive booking.
14:20 – Bravo Zulu 14/1
Daniel and Clare Kubler seem to target their horses at the Rowley Mile and they had one of their biggest victories at the course last season when Astro King landed the Cambridgeshire. The stable looks to have another big chance in the JRA Handicap (14:20) with the progressive Bravo Zulu.
The son of National Defense built on his promising debut at Wolverhampton last September with a wide-margin victory in a Kempton maiden in November and he followed up that success with another win at Southwell last month. He beat the reopposing African Spirit, with the front two clear of the rest.
Winning jockey Rossa Ryan reportedly said that Bravo Zulu would be suited by stepping up to a mile after that 7f victory and the Kubler team have evidently listened. The extra distance could bring more.
This is a stronger race and Bravo Zulu now makes his handicap and turf debut, but a mark of 84 doesn’t look too harsh and most of his relations were equally effective on grass. He should go on the surface and Richard Kingscote, who rode him to win at Kempton last year, is a positive back riding.
14:55 – Light Speed 28/1
It’s not often you get to back an Andrew Balding-trained runner at a big price and that is particularly true when Silvestre de Sousa is riding, so it’s worth taking a chance when they partner with Light Speed in the feature mile handicap (14:55). He might be capable of making a winning turf debut.
The son of Mehmas is related to several winners on turf, so he should have no problem with the surface, and he only needs to return to his best all-weather form to have a chance in this handicap.
Light Speed won three in a row on the all-weather over the winter and, while he comes here having run three poor races on the trot, he did show more when beaten only five and a half lengths last time.
He has now dropped back to a mark just 3lb higher than when successful on his handicap debut at Lingfield in December and Light Speed had to race wide throughout in a hot race there last time. He was never well positioned, but was running on late and might be suited by dropping back to a mile.
There is usually a good pace over the straight mile at Newmarket and that might bring the selection’s stamina into play. It’s worth taking a chance on him springing a surprise.
