It's Fighting Fifth day at Newcastle with the Grade 1 feature the undoubted headline act on the seven-race card on Saturday.
The latest horse racing betting tips from Racing Post tipster Robbie Wilders.
13:03 Newcastle - Zanndabad @ 3/1
14:10 Newcastle - Lump Sum @ 14/1
15:20 Newcastle - Jet Plane @ 10/1
13:03 Newcastle - Zanndabad @ 3/1
There is a five-figure winning purse up for grabs in the 2m6f novice hurdle at Newcastle and Tony Martin can take this out with Zanndabad. The six-year-old can capitalise on the 8lb he receives from Skyjack Hijack, who has been in excellent form and seeks a six-timer.
When Skyjack Hijack started his winning sequence his hurdles rating was similar to that of Zanndabad on the Flat.
This horse was sent off favourite when a non-staying sixth in the Ascot Stakes only two starts back and followed that with an encouraging sixth in the Irish Cesarewitch when he was given too much to do. They are two pieces of top Flat staying handicap form.
With only six starts over hurdles and none at a trip this far, Zanndabad could leave his previous form in this sphere well behind him for the same connections, who combined for a well-backed winner at Cheltenham’s November meeting recently.
14:10 Newcastle - Lump Sum @ 14/1
The Fighting Fifth Hurdle is a shootout between Sir Gino and Mystical Power according to the betting, but perhaps it won’t be that straightforward. Lump Sum definitely has a shout if he can improve half a stone from his return and if the big two aren’t firing on all cylinders first time out.
Sam Thomas is building an exceptional strike-rate and Lump Sum looked good on his return at Ffos Las in the Welsh Champion Hurdle. He appeared to be idling on the run to the line when his stablemate Steel Ally came back at him, but in all likelihood he met a smart rival there as that horse has since landed a lucrative prize at Haydock in good style since.
Lump Sum enjoys a sound surface, so won’t mind the terrain at Newcastle, and as a second-season hurdler who is on an upward trajectory, he is definitely worth a second look. The expectation is he wasn’t quite himself when he met Mystical Power on soft ground at Aintree in the spring.
15:20 Newcastle - Jet Plane @ 10/1
The Rehearsal Chase is a competitive affair but Jet Plane is capable of outrunning his odds in conditions he will relish for Dan Skelton.
Jet Plane is better known as a two-and-a-half-miler, but he has won over trips of 3m1f or further three times, and he gave the impression he would be aided by a return to staying trips when a keeping-on third in the Bobby Renton at Wetherby on his comeback.
That would have brought the selection forward, and lugging 12st while bidding to concede 17lb to a seriously well-handicapped novice in Jagwar unsurprisingly proved beyond him.
The winner is now rated a stone higher after easily winning at Bangor and Jet Plane’s mark remains the same.
Vintage Fizz, who was fourth in the Bobby Renton, ran a blinder when runner-up in the Grand Sefton next time, so the form looks useful.
