Newbury Horse Racing Tips for Saturday

The ground is officially described as good to soft, with some good places on the chase course ahead of Newbury's seven-race card on Saturday, and there is a dry forecast in the run up to post time on a card that features the Grade 1 extended 2m4f Challow Novices' Hurdle.

The latest horse racing betting tips for Saturday's meeting at Newbury from Racing Post tipster Dave Randall.

Saturday's Newbury Horse Racing Betting Tips and Odds

13:12 Newbury – Skycutter @ 3/1
14:20 Newbury – Surrey Quest e/w @
13/2
14:55 Newbury – The New Lion @
6/4

13:12 Newbury – Skycutter @ 3/1

Six horses are set to face the starter ahead of the Class 3 extended 2m handicap chase (13:12), and Dan Skelton's representative Skycutter is considered capable of following up his first success over fences from a 5lb lower rating at Warwick recently.

On that occasion, the six-year-old jumped well in making all under the welter burden of 12st 2lb, so carrying 12st 1lb shouldn't faze him on some better ground, and on another left-handed course where sound jumping is at a premium. A Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 131 suggests a new mark of 127 is within his compass.

The reopposing Warwick second The Good Doctor, representing Ben Pauling, is strictly weighted to reverse the placings on 3lb better terms, but the placings are taken to be confirmed with The Good Doctor possibly more at home on an easier surface.

14:20 Newbury – Surrey Quest e/w @ 13/2

10 runners are set to go down to post ahead of the Class 2 3m2f Mandarin Handicap Chase (2.20), and Toby Lawes's representative Surrey Quest makes plenty of each-way appeal.

The seven-year-old Milan gelding won this race last year from an 11lb lower rating on a soft surface, and he displayed a likeable level of versatility when reaching second behind the ill-fated Abuffalosoldier over an extended 3m3f on good ground in a Premier Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on his seasonal reappearance last month.

A reproduction of that level of form may suffice from a 2lb higher rating in this lower grade.

14:55 Newbury – The New Lion @ 6/4

Finally, The New Lion is representing Dan Skelton as one of seven runners in the feature Grade 1 extended 2m4f Challow Novices' Hurdle (14.55), and this exciting hurdling prospect has the required tools in his locker to remain unbeaten.

He only had to be pushed out to go clear in registering a promising debut victory in a Market Rasen bumper in April, and the Kayf Tara gelding didn't have to come off the bridle to win easily on his hurdling debut over an extended 2m3f in a 14-runner maiden contest at Chepstow in October.

He then only had to be pushed out once again to comfortably win a small-field Newbury novice contest over this course-and-distance under a penalty in November.

The five-year-old jumps economically, has the perfect blend of speed and stamina for this sort of test and he should appreciate the decent ground.

There is plenty of confirmed pace in this line up which should also help bring those key assets to the table in this higher grade.
