Saturday is the second day of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, with the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes as the feature race, and Racing Post tipster Robbie Wilders offers his best bets for the action.
13:30 Newbury - Desperate Hero @ 8/1
14:05 Newbury - Waxing Gibbous @ 7/2
17:00 Newbury - Movie Maker @ 11/2
13:30 Newbury - Desperate Hero @ 8/1
Desperate Hero beat 12 rivals when sixth in the Group 1 Flying Five Stakes last Sunday and can see them all off in the World Trophy at Newbury.
This is a reliable sprinter whose only sub-par effort in recent times came when the draw was against him in the King George at Goodwood.
However, he readily atoned for that at the Curragh, showing excellent early speed before his effort petered out.
He won’t encounter the Nunthorpe one-two this time, though, and a replication of that form, or indeed his wide-margin victory over American Affair on a similar surface in a Hamilton handicap in June, gives him cast-iron claims for Jack Channon.
14:05 Newbury - Waxing Gibbous @ 7/2
Waxing Gibbous produced a big career best when second in the Old Borough Cup at Haydock two weeks ago and likely won’t bump into a rival as well treated as Epic Poet was there.
Epic Poet had been shaping excellently in similar handicaps throughout the summer and Waxing Gibbous, who was up with the pace throughout, was the only prominent racer who truly saw things out.
The near five-length gap to the third, himself an in-form stayer, proves how unfortunate Waxing Gibbous was not to collect, and David Menuisier’s improving filly looks a rock-solid favourite even with a 5lb rise.
17:00 Newbury - Movie Maker @ 11/2
If any runner contesting the 7f handicap at the tail end of the Newbury card has a lot in hand of their BHA mark then it could be Movie Maker for Saeed bin Suroor.
Movie Maker recorded the standout Topspeed figure of any horse who ran on the Friday card at this meeting a year ago when dotting up in a maiden.
Bin Suroor then sent him to Meydan for a good conditions race in January, but he failed to live up to the market hype when fourth (sent off the 11/8 favourite from 3/1 on the show).
The subsequent time off suggests he has had issues, but the trainer can get them ready after a break and has an encouraging 28 percent with first-time geldings.
Dangerously unexposed, Movie Maker can emerge as one of the leading players for the Balmoral Handicap on Champions Day at Ascot in a month’s time.
