Newbury Horse Racing Tips for Friday

The first day of the Winter Carnival at Newbury takes place on Friday and the Premier raceday features two Grade 2s and several other races that have attracted exciting runners.

Kalif Du Berlais is going to be a warm order for the 2m1/2f novice handicap chase (12:45), but he comes into the race on the back of a fall on his chasing debut at Carlisle 18 days ago and it’s anyone’s guess whether his confidence will be affected. He also might not have won had he stood up.

The one to back against him is Asta La Pasta, who is beautifully bred by Walk In The Park and out of top-class mare Asian Maze, and he has already shown plenty of ability of his own this season.

Asta La Pasta won three times over hurdles last campaign, but always looked like a chaser in the making and he has improved over fences this season. He built on his chasing debut third at Ffos Las in October when bolting up by 34 lengths in a 2m4f novice handicap chase at Carlisle 18 days ago.

His main market rival, Pic Roc, fell that day and Asta La Pasta will need more to defy a 4lb rise in the weights, but he is open to loads more improvement for top connections, so might be up to the task.

14:30 Newbury - Sir Psycho @ 7/1

The 2m4f handicap chase (14:30) looks like a good opportunity for the Harry Derham-trained Sir Psycho to get revenge on his old rival Heltenham and inflict a first defeat on him at Newbury.

The pair finished first and second in a course-and-distance handicap in March and only a neck separated them, with Heltenham coming out on top. However, this time Sir Psycho has a 2lb pull in the weights and that should give him a huge chance of reversing the places on these revised terms.

Sir Psycho has run only once since and he failed to complete when falling five out at Punchestown in May, but he was going well at the time and appeared to be nicely positioned to launch a challenge.

He returns from a 210-day summer break, but was successful on his seasonal reappearance last year following a similar absence and the Derham team often target this course, where they are 16 percent.

15:40 Newbury - Chantry House @ 8/1

The 3m handicap hurdle (15:40) brings the curtain down on the card and it wouldn’t be Newbury without a Nicky Henderson-trained winner, so step forward the classy Chantry House.

He is almost 11 now but still has plenty of ability and showed that on several occasions last season without winning. He hit the frame in hot handicaps at Cheltenham and Huntingdon and wound up the campaign with a close fifth of 25 behind Maxxum in a competitive handicap at Punchestown in May.

Chantry House has dropped to a career-low mark of 139 in Britain and that sneaks him in nicely at the top of the weights in this 0-140 handicap. There is every chance that he might have a class edge.

This will be his first run for 211 days, but that is a big positive for Chantry House because he always runs well when fresh. His record first time out, or after breaks of at least 50 days, reads 111111U3 and, if he is going to win one this season, it will surely be following a long absence just like this one.
