13:42 Musselburgh - St Pancras @ 20/1

Surrey-based trainer Toby Lawes has only saddled one previous runner at a Scottish track and that was Surrey Quest, who came within a nose of plundering the Scottish Grand National at Ayr in April. He sends St Pancras to Musselburgh for the Scottish Triumph Hurdle and his four-year-old can go well at a big price.

St Pancras was progressive on the Flat for Martyn Meade, bolting up by seven lengths off a mark of 77 on his final start in that code in October, and will have learned plenty from his hurdles debut at Ascot behind Lulamba a fortnight ago.

St Pancras was never a factor in fifth and will need to jump better, but that race was stronger than this one and the winner is now favourite for the Triumph Hurdle. By Siyouni and out of Lillie Langtry winner Pilaster, he has the pedigree to reach a decent level over hurdles.

14:17 Musselburgh - Florida Dreams @ 5/1

Nicky Richards surely would have had an eye on this meeting from some way out and could be in for a big day at Musselburgh, with his Florida Dreams holding standout claims in the Scottish County Handicap Hurdle.

Florida Dreams hasn’t scaled the heights expected after his Grade 2 bumper victory at the Grand National meeting in 2023, but has often found himself running in unsuitable races on ground he doesn’t enjoy.

Both his performances in good-ground two-mile hurdles this term were promising before a lesser effort over 2m4f on soft going at Aintree on Boxing Day.

He fended off subsequent two-time winner Salsada on his return at Hexham before catching the eye when fifth in a hot running of the Greatwood from off the pace while sporting first-time cheekpieces. He brings a touch of class to the table and won’t be far away if recapturing the spark of those two efforts returned to a sound surface.

14:50 Musselburgh - The Kalooki Kid @ 2/1

Richards also has an outstanding chance in the Scottish Champion Chase with The Kalooki Kid, whose ceiling is surely higher than that of his rivals.

A promising novice hurdler last term, The Kalooki Kid was always destined to do better over fences and that’s exactly how it has panned out.

He appeared to find two miles on the sharp side behind next-time-out winner Doyen Du Bar at Ayr on his chasing debut in November before taking a good leap forward from that initial effort at Doncaster over an extra few furlongs.

The selection toyed with fellow promising novice Bucksy Des Epeires there, relishing the longer yardage, and this looks an ideal target against more exposed opposition.
