It's the second day of the Arc meeting at Longchamp and the racing is fiercely competitive as well as being top class. Here are the latest horse racing betting tips for Sunday's card from the Racing Post's Gary Savage.
12:55 Longchamp - Zarigana @ 1/2
14:05 Longchamp - Mgheera @ 33/1
15:20 Longchamp - Delius @ 16/1
12:55 Longchamp - Zarigana @ 1/2
With the two most recent French winners of this race coming in the Prix d'Aumale in September, that Group Three over course and distance has become a key trial for this.
It was won in imperious fashion this year by Zarigana, who as a grand-daughter of Zarkava has plenty to live up to, but who has looked in her two outings so far as though she is a very high-class filly.
After a snug success in a Chantilly maiden, she stepped up into a higher grade on only her second start against some fillies who had already shown a decent level of form.
Mikael Barzalona showed no urgency on the 4/5 favourite, oozing confidence as the race got going, and after going wide on the bend she put the race to bed without being asked for too much effort.
It was a performance reminiscent of Zarkava herself, who took this on her second start, and in beating fillies who have won or placed at Group and Listed level with such nonchalance she looked out of the very top drawer.
14:05 Longchamp - Mgheera @ 33/1
It's great to see the Abbaye back in a more friendly slot on the schedule and as ever it promises to be a burn up from the gate, with favourite Bradsell likely to take them along as he searches for his third Group One in succession.
In a British dominated market, there are plenty who reoppose him but with his straightforward running style he is arguably not a bad price.
The one I fancy to run a big race though is one of the outsiders of the field who in her last two starts has shown that she is capable of mixing it at this level.
At Deauville in August she looked like she may give the reappearing Bradsell a race as she travelled strongly and almost drew upsides before he quickened away in the last half furlong.
Mgheera has a 4lb swing in her favour today, which isn't enough to enable her to turn the tables, but i'm hoping that a few will try to to take the favourite on and set the race up for something to finish late.
That pace burn-up was the scenario in the selections most recent start, the Petit Couvert over course and distance in September, where even her close-up fifth doesn't tell the whole story.
Her habitual slow start meant that Guillame Millet had to get his filly to change direction several times as the pair made headway through the latter stages.
She breezed past No Half Measures, who is second favourite today, and finished almost upsides Grand Grey and Rogue Lightning who are much shorter in the betting.
Her high draw is no advantage, but given her run style it shouldn't affect her too much and as long as there is plenty of pace on I can see her finishing to great effect and rewarding each-way support.
15:20 Longchamp - Delius @ 16/1
The big race doesn't look as stellar as usual, and I fancy one unproven at the very highest level to run a big race.
With the standard not that daunting, potential rather than proven class could be key to this year's renewal, and Delius, who only began his career in April, could make the necessary improvement to come out on top.
Having bagged a Group Three on his third start, the son of Frankel's most recent starts have both seen him finish behind today's favourite Sosie, beaten two-and-a-quarter and one-and-a-half lengths.
Both the Grand Prix de Paris and the Prix Niel were small-field affairs run at a dawdle, which wouldnt' have helped the strong-travelling but inexperienced Delius, and a bigger field should help him settle.
Breaking from stall seven should give his jockey options and after only five starts and already within hailing distance of the best in this race, he can come out on top for last year's winning stable.
