It’s Classic trials day on turf at Lingfield on Saturday and only four years ago Adayar finished second in the Derby trial before going on to land the big one at Epsom the following month. Could there be another Derby winner on show this weekend?
Read the latest horse racing betting tips for Saturday’s card at Lingfield from Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway.
13:50 Lingfield - Fox Avatar @ 11/4
14:25 Lingfield - Power Of Destiny @ 11/4
15:00 Lingfield - Prince Of The Seas @ 7/1
13:50 Lingfield - Fox Avatar @ 11/4
The 1m2f handicap (13:50) looks like a good opportunity for the lightly-raced four-year-old Fox Avatar, who should appreciate returning to turf after showing promise on his all-weather debut just last month.
The son of Frankel was making his handicap bow on that occasion too and kept on strongly down the outside to be beaten only a length and a half. He was poorly positioned in rear after racing keenly to post and in the early stages, and did well to get so close at a track like Chelmsford, which favours front-runners.
That was an indication that Fox Avatar has his share of ability and connections now remove the hood that he wore for the first time that day, suggesting they think he won’t race as keenly this time.
He was a good third on his debut at Salisbury on fast ground, so quick conditions shouldn’t be a problem, and Fox Avatar can take another big step forward for leading trainer Roger Varian.
14:25 Lingfield - Power Of Destiny @ 11/4
It could be a good day for King Power Racing because they own Fox Avatar and also Power Of Destiny, who is fancied to land the 1m31/2f handicap (14:25) for the in-form Ralph Beckett stable.
Power Of Destiny isn’t the most consistent and was well below her best when always behind at Newcastle last time, but is better judged on her previous form which suggests she is in good heart.
The four-year-old was beaten only a short-neck into third in a fillies’ handicap at this course in January on the all-weather and did a lot of her best work towards the finish over 1m2f that day. She steps up a furlong-and-a-half in trip this time and looks capable of improving for this stiffer test of stamina.
She is suited by fast ground on turf, so conditions are ideal, and her run last month was her first since January. It’s possible that she needed the outing and that is an excuse for the poor performance.
A reproduction of her best form will give her a chance off only 1lb higher than for her near-miss on the all-weather at this course two starts ago.
15:00 Lingfield - Prince Of The Seas @ 7/1
The Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes (15:00) is the big race on the card and this could also go to Beckett with Prince Of The Seas, who is better than he was able to show when fifth at Epsom last month.
Prince Of The Seas raced keenly in rear on his first start since September and didn’t handle the undulating track. He was all at sea on the camber in the home straight and hung towards the inside, but made good headway close to the line. That suggested he finished his race with something left.
The son of Sea The Stars is bred to be a class act because his dam is a half-sister to 1999 champion sprinter Stravinsky, and Prince Of The Seas looked to have plenty of ability himself when running away with a maiden at Sandown last season. That was over a mile, but he was strong at the line.
He should be fully fit with his Epsom reappearance under his belt and can take a big step forward, with the extra furlong-and-a-half looking certain to suit.
