The busy racing period continues with another seven meetings on Saturday, including Grade 1 action from Leopardstown.
12:50 Leopardstown - Cozone @ 50/1
14:35 Leopardstown - Galopin Des Champs @ 11/10
15:05 Leopardstown - West Is Awake @ 33/1
12:50 Leopardstown - Cozone @ 50/1
Race two on Leopardstown’s card might not be the classiest contest over the four days at Leopardstown this week but it’s arguably the most competitive, with cases to be made for many of them.
However, one that caught the eye at a likely double figure price was Cozone for Matthew Smith. This son of Pour Moi got his head back in front at Clonmel earlier this season and hit the crossbar in a couple of competitive handicaps last month.
The seven-year-old hasn’t had much go right for him in a couple of more recent starts but the trip was probably too short for him at Navan last time out and he should appreciate a return to 2m4f on good ground here.
Furthermore, the trainer’s son, James Smith, gets back on board and he’s the only jockey to have ridden the selection to victory over jumps so that should be seen as a positive, particularly with the rider amongst the winners in recent weeks (two winners from his last four rides at the time of writing). He’s starting to look like good value for the 7lb he can still claim at present.
A mark of 106 is the lowest that Cozone has been since getting his head in front at Listowel in September 2023, his last handicap success and he looks primed for a big run in this contest.
14:35 Leopardstown - Galopin Des Champs @ 11/10
It was slightly surprising to see that Galopin Des Champs wasn’t outright favourite for the feature race on day three.
The dual Gold Cup winner doesn’t seem to be in love with Punchestown and can need his seasonal reappearance outing, so it looked like he did pretty well in the circumstances over an insufficient 2m4f on last month’s return in the John Durkan.
While Fact To File is a horse on the up, he’s still got to go some to reach the kind of level of Galopin Des Champs if the latter is on his A-game and Fact To File’s John Durkan success received a bit of a knock on Boxing Day when Spillane’s Tower finished down the field in the King George, perhaps suggesting the race has been overrated.
15:05 Leopardstown - West Is Awake @ 33/1
The penultimate race on the card is another competitive handicap but one that looks capable of going well is West Is Awake.
He’s not taken to fences at all this season in beginners’ company but he was competitive from this sort of mark over timber last season and a return to this sphere could spark a revival.
There’s a chance he’ll get forgotten about in the market given his form this year and the good ground will be up his street too.
