Jonny Pearson's Flemington Betting Tips for Saturday

Following the Melbourne Cup earlier in the week the quality racing at Flemington continues with a high class card on Saturday, featuring three Group 1 races, as well as a good undercard to go with it.

Autumn Glow is arguably the biggest star on show and will likely win the Champions Mile, but at prohibitive odds that is just a race to watch and enjoy.

Racing Post handicapper and tipster Jonny Pearson is on hand to talk you through his best bets, and he has three selections for the action on Saturday morning.

Saturday’s Flemington Horse Racing Betting Tips

4/5
06:10 Flemington - Sir Delius @
13/2

02:50 Flemington - Defiantly @ 18/5

Defiantly was at one time the favourite for the Melbourne Cup, but finds himself going for this Group 3 contest instead after vets ruled him out of the earlier contest. He has won his last two starts by more than eight lengths combined, and this looks a good opportunity to make it a third win in a row.

It is a handicap and he has to shoulder top weight, but his class should see him through. His official rating underplays his ability, and this should be a step on the way to securing a Group 1 win in the future.

Dylan Browne McMonagle takes the ride, as the jockey knows the horse well, even from a wide draw, it could be a straightforward success for the duo, and another win for Joseph O’Brien in Australia.

04:50 Flemington - Tempted @ 4/5

Our second selection is in the Champions Sprint, where Tempted gets our vote of confidence. He should arguably be a shorter price than he is given that he won the Everest on his last start, and has won his last six races in total.

He is the class act in the field and the only concern is that the race is in Melbourne rather than Sydney. Provided he handled the switch of states and the straight six furlongs he should simply be too good for the rest of the field.

Joliestar and Headwall finished behind him last time, and it will take Tempted underperforming for them to turn the form around.

06:10 Flemington - Sir Delius @ 13/2

We finish with the Champions Stakes, and it looks likely to be a thriller. Aeliana is set to go off favourite but Sir Delius can get the better of her, as has been the case previously. He has underperformed on his last three starts, but possesses the highest level of ability in the field.

Those disappointing efforts all came at this course, but he has also won there in the Turnbull Stakes last October. If he is back at that level, or the level shown in April when successful at Randwick, he will take all the beating.

Aeliana holds a strong chance, but has not been at her brilliant best either of late, and of the two, Sir Delius has the most talent and looks the most likely winner.

Tipster’s Recent Winners

Jonny Pearson is a handicapper for the Racing Post who has been in good form recently, tipping four winners at the Breeders’ Cup and second placed Zahrann in the Melbourne Cup at 25/1.
