There are five meetings in Britain on Tuesday, with four taking place over jumps and the sole Flat card coming from Southwell.
Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway is on hand to talk us through his tips from across the day’s action, two of which come from that Flat meeting at Southwell and one from Huntingdon.
15:10 Huntingdon – Enthused @ 14/1
17:00 Southwell – Blenheim Lad @ 11/10
20:30 Southwell – Heathen @ 5/1
15:10 Huntingdon – Enthused @ 14/1
The 2m handicap hurdle (15:10) is the feature race at Huntingdon and the one who has been overlooked in the market is the James Owen-trained course-and-distance winner, Enthused.
The seven-year-old is only 3lb higher than when winning at Plumpton in September and has been out of form since, but his last win was a career best and this rates as a significant drop in class.
Enthused also has the visor, which he wore for his last win, back on in place of the blinkers that he sported at Plumpton last time and there is every chance that a change of headgear can work the oracle.
Owen has his string in flying form right now and Enthused has two wins from three runs at the track, for a stable that boasts an impressive 28 percent strike-rate at Huntingdon in the last five seasons.
Alex Chadwick is on board to reduce the impact of top weight and Enthused can bounce back.
17:00 Southwell – Blenheim Lad @ 11/10
The opening 1m6f handicap (17:00) at Southwell provides a golden opportunity for Blenheim Lad, who is unbeaten in two starts over course and distance and is capable of making it three from three.
Blenheim Lad is 9lb higher than for the first of his two wins, but the form of his last success has been well advertised, as the first two pulled four-and-a-half lengths clear of a subsequent winner in third.
The selection appeared to be doing only just enough, so probably had more in hand than the official winning margin of a length would suggest, while a 6lb rise might underestimate his superiority.
Trainer Camilla Poulton has four winners from four runners at Southwell, two of those wins coming from Blenheim Lad, and it will be disappointing if the stable can’t maintain its unblemished record.
20:30 Southwell – Heathen @ 5/1
The 1m6f handicap (20:30) that closes the card is more open and the one who interests me here is Heathen, who needs to bounce back from a poor run last time but had been in form before that effort.
Heathen simply didn’t fire at Lingfield last time after being stopped in his run, but there was plenty to like about his previous efforts at this course. He might have finished only seventh and eighth on his two runs before, but there was no disgrace in being beaten around five lengths on each occasion.
The David O’Meara-trained five-year-old has dropped to a mark of 78, which is 3lb lower than when last seen at this track in February, and the 228-day absence since his last run can be considered a positive. Heathen’s last two wins have come following a break and he seems to be at his best fresh.
He is only 4lb higher than when last successful at this course in December 2023 and has several other good runs at Southwell to his name. There is a chance that he can bounce back with a bang.
