12:55 Haydock - I Am Max @ 8/1

Pertemps Final qualifiers are always interesting races and this one can go the way of I Am Max for Sandy Thomson.

I Am Max has looked progressive this season and went down by a short-head over 2m5f here in January, suffering a bit of interference late in the picture. Such was his finishing effort there, and indeed on a couple of other occasions, you would give I Am Max every chance of taking his form up a notch for a greater test of stamina.

He gets that here and has fewer miles on the clock than many of his opponents. Off a low mark against a few who may be keen to preserve their rating for the Final at the Cheltenham Festival, I Am Max can produce a bold effort.

14:05 Haydock - Whistleinthedark @ 5/1

Whistleinthedark ran a cracker behind Le Milos at Warwick last Saturday when strong in the market and must hold every chance of going a place better in the veterans’ chase off 2lb lower.

The 10-year-old began the previous season contesting much better races than this off much higher marks. After an indifferent year, he now receives weight from horses he was a level or two above back then and his turn looks near.

The prospect of quicker conditions at Haydock is also a plus for the selection, and the decision to back him up so quickly in this slightly weaker heat can be rewarded.

14:40 Haydock - Nemean Lion @ 4/1

Nemean Lion, who placed over 1m7f in the Prix Chaudenay on the Flat when trained by Andre Fabre a few seasons ago, is interesting upped to three miles for the first time over hurdles in the Rendlesham.

Kerry Lee’s stable star has long given the impression staying distances could be his true calling, and the form of his 2m4f Windsor success over Salver last time when he was well-backed to do the business looks strong.

Plenty of his rivals here can be somewhat in-and-out, but Nemean Lion’s past two performances suggest he is entering his prime, and he can emerge as a dark horse for Britain in the Stayers' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next month.
