Graeme Rodway's tips

1.50 Goodwood - Temple Bruer @ 20/1
2.25 Goodwood - Torcello @ 22/1
3.00 Goodwood - River Of Stars @ 9/2
3.35 Goodwood - Makanah @ 33/1

Odds displayed were correct at the time of writing and subject to fluctuation.

1.50 Goodwood - Temple Bruer @ 20/1

The Stewards' Sprint Handicap (1.50) is the consolation race for those who didn't make it into the Stewards' Cup later on the card and preference is for the in-and-out TEMPLE BRUER.

Form figures this season of 91715 show that he tends to run one good race but then follow it with a bad one and it's worth taking a chance on a return to form after a poor run last time.

Temple Bruer never got into the race at Ascot on that occasion, but had previously looked good when landing a hot handicap at Newmarket's July course by two and a quarter-lengths.

He recorded one of his highest Racing Post Ratings on good to soft ground at Salisbury last year, so that gives hope he will handle conditions, and he has what could be a good draw in stall six. That is on the far side of the track where the ground looks likely to be at its freshest.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Temple Bruer @ 20/1 - 1pt win

2.25 Goodwood - Torcello @ 22/1

There could be an upset in the Summer Handicap (2.25) if the rain arrives because the old boys Euchen Glen and TORCELLO love it when the mud is flying and both are well handicapped.

Preference is for Torcello, who is only 1lb higher than when nearly stealing a race from the front at Newmarket in May and will probably have been trained with this race in mind since.

The nine-year-old was only just collared by HMS President when losing out by a neck in that 16-runner contest at the Guineas meeting and that was on soft ground. A reproduction of that effort might do the job here and you can ignore his recent sixth at Newmarket's July meeting.

That came on good ground and Torcello is far more effective on slower conditions. There is a chance he can return to his best, provided the rain comes, at a course where he has won before.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Torcello @ 22/1 - 1pt win

3.00 Goodwood - River Of Stars @ 9/2

Free Wind is a warm order for the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (3.00), but she was below-par when last seen in the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot and is worth opposing at such a short price.

The horse to back is RIVER OF STARS, who is progressive and comes here following back-to-back career-best RPRs. She can upset the favourite if improving further.

River Of Stars got up in the final stride to beat Free Wind's stablemate Mimikyu over this 1m6f trip at York on her seasonal reappearance in May and ran an even better race in defeat last month.

That was her first start at Group 2 level and River Of Stars was beaten only three-quarters of a length by The Good Man in the Prix Maurice de Nieuil at Longchamp. She will need to come on again, but has the scope to make the progress required and could cause an upset.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

River Of Stars @ 9/2 - 1pt win

3.35 Goodwood - Makanah @ 33/1

The Stewards' Cup (3.35) is the feature race on Saturday and it's worth taking a chance on MAKANAH, who loves testing ground and is well handicapped off 5lb lower than his last win.

Makanah has improved with each of his three starts this season and followed his fifth in a hot 6f handicap at York’s Dante meeting in May with an even better fourth in the Gosforth Park Cup at Newcastle last time. He was doing all of his best work near the finish over 5f that day.

The selection has shown his best form at the minimum trip, but has won over 6f and Goodwood is a sharp test at that distance. It's downhill all the way and speed is the key.

Makanah was beaten only four and a half lengths into seventh in this race last year off a mark 4lb higher than this and, if he is going to land a big prize at this distance, this race might be it.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Makanah @ 33/1 - 1pt win

Keith Melrose’s tips

2.25 Goodwood - Nostrum @ 8/13
3.00 Goodwood - Revich @ 14/1
3.35 Goodwood - Highfield Princess @ 10/11

Odds displayed were correct at the time of writing and subject to fluctuation.

2.25 Goodwood - Nostrum @ 8/13

Two years ago this race announced the arrival of Baaeed and another slow-burning three-year-old might well use it as a platform to Group 1s this year.

Nostrum was actually in Wednesday's Sussex Stakes until the declarations stage. He was kept back for the easier task later in the week.

That is his trainer Sir Michael Stoute's style and, furthermore, Ryan Moore probably wanted to keep the ride rather than give it up to saddle Paddington, which is what would have happened in the Sussex.

Nostrum made quick strides as a two-year-old, winning a maiden and the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes before going off joint-favourite for the Dewhurst Stakes.

The only horses that finished in front of him that day were Chaldean and Royal Scotsman, who were first and third in the 2,000 Guineas.

Nostrum was a long time in coming back, but made up for it with a convincing win in a Listed race at Newmarket's July meeting.

Who won that same Listed race en route to taking this a couple of years ago? A certain Baaeed.

Keith Melrose’s tip:

Nostrum @ 8/13 - 1pt win

3.00 Goodwood - Revich @ 14/1

The Golden Mile has tended to be a huge draw race in recent years. Those in the lowest six stalls have beaten the rest of the field hands down, in spite of there being so many fewer of them.

Admittedly, with the way races have panned out since the rain arrived it may be different this year. Runners have shown a tendency to come to the stands side, which in theory would negate any draw advantage.

However, with that ground churning up with every race that passes, there is a good chance the field will revert.

So I am sticking with Revich, who will break from stall one, but it is not just because of his draw that I fancy him.

Revish is a consistent horse, with loads of form at around 7f and a mile at tight and fast tracks. In fact, he ran the race of his life at Chester three months ago, on soft ground beating a subsequent Royal Ascot winner in Witch Hunter.

He has been kept busy since, but went well when fourth to Perotto in a valuable handicap at Sandown last time.

With his draw, his suitability to soft ground and consistent profile, Revich is a natural choice on bet365's enhanced each-way terms in the Golden Mile.

Keith Melrose’s tip:

Revich @ 14/1 - 1pt each-way

3.35 Goodwood - Highfield Princess @ 10/11

Highfield Princess has won three Group 1s in the last year but she gets into this Group 2 without a penalty. That makes a big difference, as she has been coming up just short at the top level in recent runs.

Having finished second in the Duke Of York Stakes (when giving winner Azure Blue 5lb), she placed in both the King's Stand and QEII Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Both times she seemed to just struggle to see things out so I reckon there are one of two things going on here.

Highfield Princess has always thrived on her racing and might just be working back to her best - she has never peaked before August before.

Second, she is fairly new to sprinting for all she is six and I think she might be getting faster.

If the second point is true, Goodwood's fast five-furlong course should suit ideally. Granted, soft ground does not make for fast times, but one of her Group 1s last year came on soft so Highfield Princess will handle the conditions.

Keith Melrose’s tip:

Highfield Princess @ 10/11 - 1pt win

Horse Racing betting tips: Three Goodwood tips for Thursday

The third day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival takes place on ITV on Thursday and Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway is back to mark your card on the terrestrial action.

1.50 Goodwood - Perfuse @ 5/2
2.25 Goodwood - Vandeek @ 4/1
3.00 Goodwood - Chesspiece @ 9/2
3.35 Goodwood - Blue Rose Cen @ 1/1

1.50 Goodwood - Perfuse @ 5/2

The Kincsem Handicap (1.50) is always one of the stronger three-year-old races of the week and this year looks no exception, but Perfuse should be up to landing it under Ryan Moore.

The son of Lope De Vega made his debut only in April but has quickly made up into a smart performer.

He looked top class when scoring by a long way on heavy going at Nottingham in May and showed versatility ground-wise by scoring on good to firm next time at Doncaster.

Perfuse went off favourite for the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot last time and finished only fifth, but he chased a strong pace that day and did comfortably best of those who raced in the first third of the field.

He is much better than his finishing position suggests.

He races off the same mark here and looks certain to run well now returned to this 1m2f trip.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Perfuse @ 5/2 - 1pt win

2.25 Goodwood - Vandeek @ 4/1

Unquestionable will be a warm order for the Markel Richmond Stakes (2.25), but he comes here after being a beaten favourite in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh and can be taken on.

The most exciting horse in the race is Vandeek, who cost 625,000gns at the breeze-up sales and showed why when doing everything wrong and still winning on his debut at Nottingham.

Vandeek made a mess of the start and ran green early but took off in the closing stages to run down market rival Never So Brave, who had experience on his side after a promising debut.

The front two pulled four lengths clear of the remainder of the field and Vandeek is open to plenty of improvement with that experience under his belt.

He should take a step forward.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Vandeek @ 4/1 - 1pt win

3.00 Goodwood - Chesspiece @ 9/2

The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes (3.00) comes up next and it provides a good opportunity for Simon and Ed Crisford, who train Vandeek, to land another victory.

Chesspiece has improved with every start and that is despite looking a non-stayer when stepped up to 1m6f in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot behind top-class Gregory in June.

He took a keen hold that day and didn’t get home, but still managed to hold on for third and the drop back to 1m3f at Hamilton last time suited him perfectly.

He made no mistake there. Chesspiece went to the front that day and made all the running to score easily by a length and a quarter - he had lots in hand.

That is a race the Crisford team won with West Wind Blows last season and he has gone on to win another two Group 3 races since landing that contest.

There is every chance Chesspiece can progress in a similar manner for a first Group victory.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Chesspiece @ 9/2 - 1pt win

3.35 Goodwood - Blue Rose Cen @ 1/1

The Qatar Nassau Stakes (3.35) could be one of the races of the season between two top-class fillies and I fancy French raider Blue Rose Cen to get the better of last year’s winner Nashwa.

Blue Rose Cen has been the outstanding horse in France this season and has already turned away two British and Irish-trained runners when winning the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp in May.

She beat another four by landing the Prix de Diane at Chantilly last time.

That latest victory in the French equivalent of the Oaks was her best yet as she slammed the reopposing Never Ending Story by four lengths on her first start over further than a mile and Blue Rose Cen appears to have plenty more to give, now that we know she stays this distance.

Blue Rose Cen looks like the outstanding filly in Europe right now and is taken to prove it.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Blue Rose Cen @ 1/1 - 1pt win

Horse Racing betting tips: Three Goodwood tips for Wednesday

There is Group 1 action at Goodwood on Wednesday and Keith Melrose from the Racing Post thinks that Paddington might be vulnerable.

2.25 Goodwood - Olivia Maralda @ 7/1

In a wide-open running of the Oak Tree Stakes, the unexposed and improving OLIVIA MARALDA looks a good bet to get our punting off to a good start on Sussex Stakes day.

This filly had a few runs at two for Michael O'Callaghan before Roger Varian took on the training this season and started by doing something rather un-Varian-like. He pitched her straight into the 1,000 Guineas, in which she was far from disgraced as a 125/1 shot in seventh of 20.

That faith was repaid pretty quickly, as the next time Olivia Maralda showed up was in a 7f Listed race at the Derby meeting at Epsom she won convincingly, putting in a performance which has her right up there on ratings in this field.

She went off 5/1 for the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot a few weeks later and finished a respectable fifth. Back in females-only company, Olivia Maralda can keep on climbing. Not that she needs to find much on that Epsom run.

Keith Melrose's tip:

Olivia Maralda @ 7/1 - 1pt win

3.35 Goodwood - Inspiral @ 4/1

Plenty of the Aidan O'Brien types who land a hatful of Group 1s in the first half of the season struggle to keep it up. It happened to Duke Of Marmalade, Galileo, even recent Guineas winners like Gleneagles and Churchill.

Paddington has been on the go since March and, while he has met every challenge to now including three Group 1s, it is reasonable to start asking when his busy campaign may catch up with him. Only famously tough O'Brien campaigners like Rock Of Gibraltar and Giant's Causeway kept running their best into the autumn having won Classics in the spring.

Furthermore, Paddington is running here out of opportunity more than anything. Connections have gambled on the Sussex being a weak race, and they were nearly right. Nearly.

INSPIRAL is a champion on her day, a three-time Group 1 winner. She was only beaten a neck in the Queen Anne last time and will have no problems with anything away from extremes of ground. As an out-and-out miler, she is also less likely to be inconvenienced by the sort of muddling early pace that seems likely in this race. Paddington, meanwhile, takes a bit of stoking up and may be caught on the hop.

Keith Melrose's tip:

Inspiral @ 4/1 - 1pt win

5.20 Goodwood - Rhoscolyn @ 7/2

RHOSCOLYN is a fixture in top handicaps. He was seventh in last year's Golden Mile here and beaten a short head and a nose over 7f back at Goodwood a month later. He was rated 101 that day and is fully a stone lower now.

Usually when taking a horse off a reduced mark, punters have to balance that with a lack of recent form. With Rhoscolyn, that is not really the case. Sure, his season overall has been a bit of a non-starter, but his second-placed finish at Beverley nine days ago was much more like it.

He carries the same mark of 87 into this race, which is much weaker than the sort of heats we are used to seeing him in.

Keith Melrose's tip:

Rhoscolyn @ 7/2 - 1pt win

Horse Racing betting tips: Four Goodwood tips for Tuesday

2.50 Goodwood - Caius Chorister @ 20/1

The Chesterfield Cup Handicap (2.50) is always one of the most competitive races of the week and this year is no exception.

However, that means there will be some value floating about and the horse who catches my eye is Caius Chorister, who is ridden by William Buick.

He rides this track well and he partnered Migration to victory in this contest two years ago for French trainer David Menuisier.

It looks significant that he has been called upon again by the same stable and Caius Chorister has the form to win this if she can show it on the day.

Caius Chorister was successful at this meeting last year and seems to enjoy racing at downhill tracks.

She showed that twice this season when finishing second in the City And Suburban at Epsom on her season return before taking second again at that track over 1m4f next time out.

She disappointed when tenth at Pontefract last time after going off favourite, but that was in Listed company around a stiff track and she suffered interference.

The return to 1m2f on his sort of course will definitely suit Caius Chorister and she is strongly fancied to bounce back.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Caius Chorister @ 20/1 - 1pt win

3.25 Goodwood - Iberian @ 7/1

The Nicholson Gin Vintage Stakes (3.25) is the feature for juveniles on the first day and Iberian is capable of making it two wins from two following his impressive debut victory.

Iberian cost 200,000gns as a yearling and his dam is a sister to high-class Group 3 winner High Heeled. She is also a half-sister to the dam of the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Just The Judge and both of those two were trained by the Hills stable, so they know the family well.

The selection justified his price tag when landing a novice at Newbury last month and he bolted up by a length and three-quarters, needing only to be ridden out hands-and-heels.

He was well on top that day and had two subsequent winners behind, so the form is solid enough.

Iberian comes here with a big reputation and is capable of making the step up to Group class.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Iberian @ 7/1 - 1pt win

4.00 Goodwood - Audience @ 7/1

Kinross heads the market for the Lennox Stakes (4.00), but he is a short price for one who comes here following three defeats in a row and hasn’t always shown his best at this track.

There is value in opposing the favourite and the one to back is Audience, who has shown improved form since being gelded and might be capable of continuing his rate of progress.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained four-year-old bolted up by four and a quarter lengths on his first start after the procedure in a handicap at Leicester last October and returned from 263 days off the track to record a big career best by winning the Criterion at Newmarket last time.

Audience thrashed a good field that included the reopposing Jumby and Pogo, who was a close third in this last year. Rider Robert Havlin didn’t even have to get serious with him.

That is good form and Audience is improving quickly enough to upset the market leaders.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Audience @ 7/1 - 1pt win

4.35 Goodwood - Courage Mon Ami @ 15/8

The Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (4.35) provides a good opportunity for Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami to confirm himself the best stayer in Britain under Frankie Dettori.

The four-year-old won both his starts on the all-weather last season but has looked even better on turf and was having only his fourth outing when landing the big one at Royal Ascot.

He easily beat several of these rivals that day and the only one to give him anything to think about was the consistent Coltrane.

The front two were three and three-quarter lengths clear of the rest of the field and Courage Mon Ami did well to peg back Coltrane, who had first run.

That form sets the standard and he is open to any amount of further improvement on just his fifth outing. It will be a surprise if he can’t confirm the form with Coltrane and score again.

Graeme Rodway's tip:

Courage Mon Ami @ 15/8 - 1pt win
