Goodwood Cup Odds: Kyprios eyes second Goodwood Cup crown

The focus will be on Chichester for Glorious Goodwood this week and Kyprios is expected to land the spoils and win the Goodwood Cup for a second time.

Aidan O'Brien's charge comes into the race in fine form, and the Irish handler will fancy his chances of winning the Group 1 race for a fourth time.

Recent winners include Stradivarius, who won the race four times in a row between 2017 and 2020, Trueshan and Quickthorn.

Kyprios

The 2022 winner of the Goodwood Cup has won three races in a row this year.

O'Brien's runner started the year with a routine win at Navan in April before landing a Group 3 success at Leopardstown in May.

Six weeks ago, he looked back to his very best as he won the Ascot Gold Cup ahead of Trawlerman in what was his fifth Group 1 success.

O'Brien also won the race twice with Yeats, so another win for Kyprios would be an emotional one for the family and connections.

Coltrane

Andrew Balding's runner finished fifth in the Ascot Gold Cup, but he won the Sagaro Stakes in May at the same track.

The seven-year-old has struggled with consistency in the previous 12 months and will need a huge performance to keep pace with Kyprios, having finished 11 lengths behind O'Brien's stale star last time out.

Gregory

One of John & Thady Gosden's two runners in the Goodwood Cup, and Gregory has a point to prove this week.

The four-year-old won the first three races of his career at Haydock, Goodwood and Ascot, but he is now winless in four. His success in Berkshire came in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, and he looked a future staying star.

He finished seventh after a poor showing in the Ascot Gold Cup, so he is bound to produce better after a short break.

Sweet William

The Gosden's will also saddle Sweet William, who will be partnered by Robert Havlin on Tuesday.

The five-year-old finished a respectable third in the Ascot Gold Cup, suggesting there's more to come at Goodwood.

While he finished six lengths behind Kyprios, he has shown lots of promise on occasions.

Sweet Williams won the Henry II Stakes at Sandown in May, and he could be a player if he can arrive late in the final few furlongs.

Al Qareem

The five-year-old was in action less than three weeks ago, finishing second to Alsakib in the Group 3 John Smith's Silver Cup Stakes at York.

Karl Burke's runner last won in October 2023, but he has been consistent since then, finishing in the top five in every one of his five outings since that success.

Al Qareem, who would prefer good or slower ground, will step up in trip for Tuesday's Goodwood Cup, and that could be his undoing, but connections have thrown their hat into the ring.

Trueshan

Alan King's runner was victorious at the start of the month at Sandown, while he landed the Doncaster Cup and Prix du Cadran last season.

Trueshan was dropped in grade for that Sandown win and needs rain, which the forecast suggests is unlikely.

Jockey Hollie Doyle will once again lead Trueshan home, but a place may be the best they can hope for based on current conditions.

Tashkhan

Brian Ellison will hope to see Tashkhan win for the first time since September 2023, but recent form suggests he will do well not to finish last in Tuesday's Goodwood Cup.

The six-year-old failed to finish in the top five in his opening two runs of 2024. He signed off 2023 with a superb third in the Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp, but he has a lot to prove to suggest he can return to that level anytime soon.
