Duke of Cambridge Stakes odds: Rogue Millennium fancied at Royal Ascot

The Duke Of Cambridge Stakes is a Group 2 race for fillies and mares on Wednesday of Royal Ascot and Rogue Millennium is one of the fancied runners as she bids to repeat last year's success.

Trained by Tom Clover last season, the five-year-old is now a fledgling member of Joseph Patrick O'Brien’s star-studded cast and she will be hoping to build on her third-placed finish on her stable bow in Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh.

Rogue Millennium was beaten just over two lengths by Ocean Jewel, who also makes the trip to Ascot for Willie McCreery and who will be expected to come on for that run which was her first race in seven months.

However, bookmakers believe her biggest challenge may stem from the unexposed Laurel, who has raced only five times despite being a five-year-old for the popular John & Thady Gosden team.

A field of 14 are set to go to post, with the runners consisting of nine from Britain, four from Ireland and one hailing from France, in the Christopher Head-trained Sea The Lady.

(Odds will display when the market is available)

Laurel

Despite returning to the track following a 396-day layoff, Laurel is sure to be popular among punters, with Ryan Moore being awarded the ride for John & Thady Gosden.

The five-year-old is extremely lightly-raced for a horse her age, having had only five career starts and three of those trips to the track have resulted in victory.

In fact, the only two times that Laurel has been beaten have come in Group 1 events, with her chasing home Fonteyn in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket as a three-year-old, while she was beaten just over six lengths in last year’s Lockinge, which was won by the Godolphin-owned Modern Games.

If fit and raring to go after such a lengthy lay-off, she should enjoy this drop in grade and the drying ground will be in her favour.

Rogue Millennium

On what is only her second start for the Joseph Patrick O'Brien yard, Rogue Millennium may be at the top of many punters’ lists after her success in the race last season.

The five-year-old, then trained by Tom Clover, edged out Random Harvest in a tight finish to claim the Group 2 prize last year and she built on that to finish runner-up to Tahiyra in the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.

The daughter of Dubawi was beaten just over two lengths into third by Ocean Jewel on her stable debut over this trip 24 days ago and will be expected to leave that effort well behind.

Ocean Jewel

Willie McCreery’s filly produced a career-best effort when winning the Lanwades Stud Stakes at Rogue Millennium’s expense at the end of May and there could be more to come from her at this trip, given it was only her second start over a mile.

She does, however, carry a 3Ib penalty for that Group 2 success which makes things harder for her and a strongly run race would test her stamina over this stiffer track.

Breege

John & Sean Quinn’s four-year-old filly was a winner on Derby day as she scrambled home in a bunch finish in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, showing a liking for Epsom’s undulations.

That was a Group 3 prize but she has excellent course form of 332, which includes a runner-up effort behind Coppice in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot last year.

The daughter of Starspangledbanner will need to take another step forward, but she is a model of consistency, having finished in the top three in nine of her 13 career starts.

Royal Dress

Royal Dress has three-quarters of a length to make up on Breege from their latest meeting at Epsom, although James Tate’s charge had finished ahead of that runner when winning a Listed prize at Goodwood at the beginning of May.

The four-year-old has improved a bundle since stepping up to a mile, with her three runs over the trip reading 413 and she could be dangerous given how strongly she has been finishing those races.
