The ground is officially good to yielding ahead of Down Royal's seven-race jumps card on Saturday, for which Racing Post tipster Dave Randall offers his latest horse racing betting tips.
14:40 Down Royal – Envoi Allen @ 11/4
15:20 Down Royal – Found A Fifty @ 8/11
15:50 Down Royal – Classical Creek @ 8/13
14:40 Down Royal – Envoi Allen @ 11/4
Five runners are set to go to post for the Grade 1 3m Champion Chase (14.40) from Down Royal on Saturday afternoon, and last year's one-two are expected to fight this race out once again.
On that occasion, the ground was officially soft and Envoi Allen, who had won the previous running in 2022 on his seasonal reappearance on a yielding surface, had to settle for a neck second behind the remarkably consistent Gerri Colombe in a ding-dong battle for the line.
Both horses can usually be relied on when fresh and Gerri Colombe, who is yet to finish outside the front two in 13 starts under rules, took his form to a new level in three further starts last season. He put a below-par second to Galopin Des Champs in Leopardstown's Grade 1 Savills Chase behind him when a much better second behind the same horse in the 2.5f longer Cheltenham Gold Cup, and then won the Grade 1 Bowl Chase at Aintree.
The trouble is that you are being asked to take odds-on about a horse that ideally prefers a slightly longer trip and has yet to race on ground described as officially good. He has won on yielding.
Don't get me wrong, Gerri Colombe will probably be fine, and is the most likely winner on these favourable terms, but there is clearly a case for backing Envoi Allen each-way against him at the prices.
The 10-year-old is 4-5 combined on good or good to yielding ground, 4-5 on this course and 4-5 at this time of year. What's more, his trainer Henry De Bromhead went 8-27 (30%) with his runners in the 14 days prior to this contest, so there is every chance that the selection is going to return from his summer holidays bouncing and kicking once again, and well enough to bring the house down if successful.
15:20 Down Royal – Found A Fifty @ 8/11
A shade of odds-on quotes are harder to resist regarding Found A Fifty in the Grade 2 2m3.5f Chase later on the card at Down Royal (15:20). The seven-year-old has been found a good opportunity to start the new season where he left off the last.
The selection was an impressive winner of a beginners' chase over this course-and-distance on his seasonal reappearance at this meeting last year, making all by an easy eight lengths, before racking up 1221 form figures in Grade 1 novice company at Leopardstown (twice), Cheltenham and Aintree.
The opposition will receive weight but the selection should have too much class.
15:50 Down Royal – Classical Creek @ 8/13
Finally, Classical Creek has strong win claims in the concluding 2m1f bumper (15.30), representing Gordon Elliott with Harry Swan in the saddle.
Elliott is a significant 8-12 in this race since 2014 and Harry Swan is 32-162 (20%) when riding Elliott's bumper horses in Ireland.
The selection cost 65,000 euros as a three-year-old and is a half-brother to a well-related bumper winner in Mill House Creek. He won an Irish point in stylish fashion on decent ground in April and can follow up on his debut under rules.
