1.50 Doncaster - Arch Moon @ 12/1

The Hippo Carpet Protector Handicap (1.50) kicks off the action and there is plenty of rain forecast at Doncaster on Sunday. That might suit ARCH MOON, who handles soft going well.

He is by Sea The Moon, whose progeny often like plenty of dig, and is now down to a mark just 2lb higher than when landing a 1m2f handicap at Wetherby in May on good ground.

Arch Moon was beaten only a length and three-quarters into fourth off 2lb higher than this at Ayr on his next outing, on good to soft ground, and a reproduction of that run may be enough.

The selection didn’t run as badly as his final position of fifth would suggest at Ayr last month in a race that was run in a good time for the grade and looks capable of defying a big weight.

3.00 Doncaster - Always Fearless @ 12/1

The Leger Legends Classified Stakes (3.00) is always one of the features of the week and it could go to Seb Sanders, who appears to have a good chance on topweight ALWAYS FEARLESS.

The six-year-old hasn’t run many times on soft, but his sire Camacho’s progeny often handle plenty of cut in the ground and Always Fearless recorded his highest turf Racing Post Rating on soft at Windsor two years ago. That suggests he will appreciate returning to this surface.

Always Fearless comes here with two wins from his last three starts, one on the all-weather and one on turf, and is only 3lb higher than when winning at Wolverhampton two weeks ago.

His highest RPR on the all-weather came over this trip at Newcastle, so the straight mile holds no fears, and Always Fearless can make another bold bid for in-form Richard Hannon.

3.35 Doncaster - Nigiri @ 7/2

Cachet will be hard to beat in the Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes (3.35) if reproducing last season’s Group 1 form, but it’s 457 days since we last saw her on the track and it’s worth taking her on.

NIGIRI might be improving quickly enough to come out on top. Ralph Beckett has a good record with Lope De Vega’s progeny and Nigiri has been no exception.

She has won her last three on ground ranging from heavy to good to firm and her best effort came last time at York’s Ebor meeting when she ran away with a fillies’ handicap.

She beat 17 rivals by four and a quarter lengths that day over this 7f trip and definitely looked up to winning in Group company.

The fact that Beckett is willing to put her into this grade, rather than staying in handicaps off what could be a lenient mark of 91, suggests he agrees.

Nigiri evidently needs to improve again, but she is going forward quickly enough to win this.

4.45 Doncaster - Swift Salian @ 8/1

The I Love Julie Parkes Nursery Handicap (4.45) looks like a hot little juvenile contest and SWIFT SALIAN is going the right way. He might be improving fast enough to break his maiden.

His best three runs have been his last three and he improved on solid efforts over 6f and 7f when going up to this mile trip for the first time at Thirsk last week.

He recorded a career-best effort that day when beaten only a length and a half into second of 11 runners.

That race was run in a solid time for the grade and Swift Salian should be capable of building on that on just his second start at the distance for the in-form David and Nicola Barron team.

He was withdrawn from a race on soft ground at Chester last month, but ran well enough on good to soft last time and his sire Holy Roman Emperor’s progeny usually handle testing conditions.

That gives hope that he can show his best even if the heavy forecast rain arrives.
