Sunday’s Curragh Horse Racing Betting Tips and Odds

16:05 - Grosvenor Square @ 14/1
15:25 - Azada @
16:40 - Verhoyen @

16:05 - Grosvenor Square @ 14/1

The British raider, Ambiente Friendly, heads the betting having not been seen to best effect when chasing home City Of Troy at Epsom at the start of the month.

That’s the best form on offer and there’s possibly more to come back on a quicker surface but there are a few reasons to take him on.

Firstly, the son of Gleneagles tends to take a keen hold in his races, none more so than in the Derby last time and he can also sweat up beforehand too which could be a negative on what looks set to be a humid day at the Curragh.

The way these tendencies are getting worse rather than better is off-putting enough at prohibitive odds.

At an each-way sort of price, Grosvenor Square might be worth chancing. His half brother, Santiago, won this race in 2020 on similar ground to what Grosvenor Square will get this time and he’s a similar type too given that he’s potentially more of a stayer than a middle distance horse.

That can suit a race like the Irish Derby which tends to be more of a grind than its English counterpart.

He looked highly promising as a juvenile and didn’t seem to be in love with the track at Chester on his reappearance.

Connections opted against a crack at Epsom, presumably thinking that the tight turns could catch this galloper out and he arrives fresher than his stablemate, Los Angeles, who was third in what was a tough race at Epsom.

Aidan O’Brien’s horses have also been coming on plenty for their initial outings this campaign.

Bet365 are top-price 14/1 about this colt at the time of writing and he’s got a decent chance of hitting the frame.

15:25 - Azada @ 5/2

There’s a good support card to the main event that includes an intriguing renewal of the Celebration Stakes.

One that looks capable of going well is the entirely unexposed Azada for Dermot Weld, who won this race back in 2009.

She looked like a really nice prospect when winning her maiden on her sole two-year-old start at Leopardstown last year and she ran a respectable race in what looked like an above average renewal of the Irish 1,000 Guineas last month.

She was a bit fresh early in that contest, a trait she didn’t show on debut and there’s a chance that she’ll continue her progress if she settles better here.

This filly is a half-sister to Caulfield Guineas winner who was adept on quick ground so different conditions could also see her improve and the marked drop in class will help too.

16:40 - Verhoyen @ 15/2

Verhoyen came in for some market support when hitting the crossbar at Fairyhouse last time and he lurks on a very nice mark, despite getting nudged up 1lb by the assessor.

He was a winner at this meeting last year over seven furlongs from a 5lb higher mark and six of his seven wins have come at this venue. Without much pace in the race, he may be able to get an easy time on the front end and while he’s yet to win at a mile, quick ground should help him get the trip.
