13:30 Cheltenham – Broadway Boy @ 11/10

The 3m11/2f handicap chase (13:30) looks like a good opportunity for the course specialist Broadway Boy, who recorded a career best in defeat at Newbury last time and will like returning to this track.

Broadway Boy was beaten only a length and three-quarters into second behind Kandoo Kid in the Newbury feature and that form has already been well advertised since. The third, Victtorino, won at Ascot next time and fifth-placed Henry’s Friend landed the Mandarin back at Newbury on Saturday.

The selection has been nudged back up 2lb in the weights, but this is a significantly easier task than he faced at Newbury last time and his exemplary record of three wins, a second and a third from just five starts at Cheltenham suggests he will be difficult to beat back on his favourite stomping ground.

14:40 Cheltenham – Twig @ 16/1

Twig has a couple of entries at Cheltenham on Wednesday, having been declared for this 3m handicap hurdle (14:40) and the following Grade 2 Relkeel Hurdle (15:15). However, his best chance surely lies in this handicap, where he might be able to outclass the field off topweight over his optimum distance.

The 10-year-old has a good record at Cheltenham, having finished second on all four starts at the course, and was beaten only by Chianti Classico in the Ultima at the festival back in March.

That was over fences, but he showed he can repeat his smart chase form over hurdles when second in the Grade 2 bet365 Hurdle at Wetherby on his seasonal reappearance in October. He was beaten only two and a half lengths by winner Beacon Edge and had subsequent scorer Kateira back in third.

He was well held in a big handicap at Haydock last time, but is better than that and returning to Cheltenham is definitely going to suit him. There is a chance that Twig might spring a surprise.

15:15 Cheltenham – Golden Ace @ 3/1

The Relkeel Hurdle (15:15) can go to Golden Ace, who is unbeaten in two starts at Cheltenham and got the better of Sunday’s runaway Leopardstown winner Brighterdaysahead at the festival in March.

Golden Ace went on to prove that victory was no fluke by landing a Listed race over course and distance in April and she shaped like she was in need of the run when behind the reopposing Lucky Place at Ascot on her seasonal return last month. She touched 1.5 in running, but faded into fourth.

She has a 6lb pull in the weights with the winner here, so is entitled to reverse the two-length margin, and the return to Cheltenham will almost certainly bring out the best in Golden Ace once again.

The forecast rain is a minor concern because she probably won’t want a slog around this stamina-sapping course at the longer distance, but she handles soft and it shouldn’t be any worse.
