19:30 Chelmsford - Merrimack @ 5/2

Stuart Williams has been banging in the winners on the all-weather so far this winter and he’s running at a strike-rate of 16% in recent weeks, showing no signs of slowing down.

One of his runners that catches the eye on Thursday evening is Merrimack, who has left the impression that a return to the winners’ enclosure could be incoming in his last couple of starts, including when a close up fourth at Kempton last time out where he was beaten by roughly two lengths.

That is a race that has worked out okay, with the fifth winning since and the winner running well in defeat (hampered before finishing off his race well) and it looked like a reasonable race for the grade.

However, it’s the drop back to the minimum distance on a speed favouring track that could be the key to Merrimack getting his back in front.

He looked like he might be a five-furlong horse to follow when bolting up at Yarmouth last summer and while he paid the price for that win with a 10lb hike from the assessor, he’s dropped 6lb subsequently and a mark of 65 should be workable.

His return to form has coincided with a link up with in-form jockey Sean Levey and there’s a chance they will be able to obtain an uncontested lead in this field from stall six.

14:50 Fairyhouse  - Quantum Quest @ 9/4

The penultimate race on Fairyhouse’s card has some nice types in it, perhaps none more so than Quantum Quest for Henry de Bromhead.

This son of Idaho ran with credit in a point behind Shuffle The Deck and was again behind that rival in maiden hurdle company at Naas last time.

That looked like a particularly warm race at the time and while the winner has disappointed since, the runner-up has hit the frame in Grade 1 company.

The forecast softer ground is also probably going to be in Quantum Quest’s favour, helping bring his stamina into play, and with improvement likely from his rules debut, he could be hard to pass.

15:25 Fairyhouse - Duffys Hodey @ 3/1

16-runner handicaps at Fairyhouse are usually pretty competitive but the finale on Fairyhouse’s card lacks depth and the one that can take advantage is Duffys Hodey.

He got his head back in front at Clonmel in early December before a solid run in defeat when making eyecatching late headway at Limerick later in the month.

He’s up another 1lb but the handicapper may not have caught up yet, while many of his expected rivals are out of form.
