The bet365 Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap (17.30) is an interesting staying race and the one to be on is Blue Sky Boy, who caught the eye when second over course and distance in January.

Blue Sky Boy made the running that day and was overhauled only inside the final furlong by the winner Carlton, who went into that race on a roll and completed a four-timer. The first two pulled three lengths clear of the remainder and the selection is only 1lb higher off this mark, so remains well treated.

The problem is that Blue Sky Boy comes here after a disappointing run at Southwell last time, when he was beaten nine and a quarter lengths into sixth of seven. However, that was his first run at the course and maybe he wasn’t ideally suited by the more galloping nature of the track.

The return to a tight circuit like Chelmsford is in the four-year-old’s favour and connections fit first-time cheekpieces. That is an indication that a big run is expected and so is the booking of Kieran Shoemark to take the ride. It will be his first for fledgling trainer Paul Attwater.

18:00 Chelmsford - Dark Sorceress @ 4/1

The first division of the bet365 Bet Boost Handicap (18:00) is a good opportunity for Dark Sorceress, who is still a maiden after eight starts, but shaped like she could put that right at this track last time.

Dark Sorceress was beaten only two and a quarter lengths into second that night and it was her best effort since her handicap debut at Nottingham. It was clear evidence that she is suited by this tight, left-handed venue, on her first visit here over course and distance, and there should be more to come.

She returns from five months off the track and will need to be at the top of her form, but Marco Ghiani has a good record on board and the selection has a good draw in stall three. There are evidently enough positives for Dark Sorceress and it will be disappointing if she can’t break her duck.

19:30 Chelmsford - Francisco @ 4/1

The Download The bet365 App Handicap (19:30) can go to Francisco, who is a consistent performer and comes into this after making the places on three of his last four starts.

This might be the day he gets his head in front because he ran one of his best races at this course last month, when beaten only a length and three-quarters into second behind Jesse Luc.

Francisco made up a lot of ground from the rear to take the runner-up spot that day after a tardy start, and was even worse at the break when third at Wolverhampton last time. He did remarkably well to be beaten only a length by the winner, having given away a lot of ground.

A better start would evidently help, but Francisco has an extra furlong to travel and that might just give him the extra time that he needs to make up any ground that he loses at the start. There is certainly no concern about him staying around this course, which puts the emphasis on speed.
