Del Mar is host to a cracking nine-race card for the second day of Breeders' Cup action and the Racing Post's Robbie Wilders offers his latest horse racing betting tips for the big day.
19:41 Del Mar - Starlust @ 28/1
21:01 Del Mar - Emily Upjohn @ 4/1
23:45 Del Mar - Notable Speech @ 9/4
19:41 Del Mar - Starlust @ 28/1
bet365 are offering four places for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and Starlust makes significant each-way appeal.
He is among the best sprinters in Europe on his day and wasn’t beaten far by Bradsell and Believing in the Nunthorpe two starts ago.
If coming straight here off the back of that run, Starlust would surely be available at shorter odds, but his ninth in the Abbaye when last seen represented a step backwards.
However, there were mitigating circumstances that day as Starlust was badly hampered by the far rail at a crucial stage.
He was an eyecatcher when not getting the clearest of runs in the Juvenile Turf Sprint at Santa Anita this time last year and can earn his redemption granted a favourable passage from a nice draw in stall four.
While the US-based sprinter Cogburn may prove tough to beat, his best form is over slightly further and stall nine is wider than ideal.
21:01 Del Mar - Emily Upjohn @ 4/1
This running of the Breeders’ Cup Turf looks weaker than usual and the stage is set for Emily Upjohn to bow out on a high on Frankie Dettori’s first ride for the Gosdens since his US venture began.
The form of Emily Upjohn’s third in the Prix Vermeille (much the best time on the Arc Trials day card) received a significant boost in the big one when the first two filled those positions again.
Soft ground around Longchamp isn’t Emily Upjohn’s ideal set of circumstances either. She needs a test of speed on a fast track and will get that at Del Mar from a lovely gate in stall two.
Conversely her chief market rival, Rebel’s Romance for Charlie Appleby, may find life tricky from the 11 box.
23:45 Del Mar - Notable Speech @ 9/4
If Rebel’s Romance is unable to collect in the Turf then his stablemate Notable Speech looks ideally poised to gain redemption for Appleby in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
The flat performance of Notable Speech in the Prix du Moulin can be forgiven as the winner stole the race from the front and the 2,000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes winner needed a faster pace to enable him to settle.
He should get the ideal set-up here under William Buick and his task has been made more straightforward due to the withdrawal of Prix de la Foret winner Ramatuelle. The selection is effectively in stall five now with that filly’s omission.
Notable Speech is blessed with an outstanding turn of foot and he makes more appeal than Porta Fortuna, who wasn’t at her best last time despite winning the Matron Stakes.
