The Group 2 Coolmore Stud Wootton Bassett Irish EBF Futurity Stakes (3.27) headlines a cracking card at the Curragh and Aidan O’Brien, who has trained eight of the past 10 winners, boasts a strong hand once more with HENRY LONGFELLOW and Portland.
This race has sliced up more than I expected at the beginning of the week and as a result Henry Longfellow will be a shorter price than ideal. However, he is a strong fancy to throw his name into the hat for next season’s 2,000 Guineas under Ryan Moore.
The once-raced Henry Longfellow’s debut Racing Post Rating of 97 when romping home over this course and distance last month is 4lb better than the best effort of stablemate Portland, who has made the track three times.
On RPRs Portland is the next best in this field and lacks the same potential, so Henry Longfellow should walk this if replicating the level of performance he demonstrated first time out when a well-backed 5/4 favourite despite lacking previous experience.
He is impeccably bred as a son of Dubawi who is out of Minding, one of O’Brien’s greatest racemares, and produced a higher RPR than that superstar filly managed to notch up on her first two runs. We are dealing with something well above average and Henry Longfellow can maintain his unbeaten record in what looks a weak Futurity.
Henry Longfellow @ 1/2 - 2pts win

The Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes is the other Group 2 on the card and this has a much more open feel. The two to head the betting for the fillies’ equivalent of the Futurity is Chesham Stakes one-two Pearls And Rubies and Snellen, but that race produced a bunched finish and the form hasn’t exactly worked out strongly.
It might be worth turning to something less exposed and I’m taking a chance on SAKTI at a much bigger price for Ger Lyons.
Surprisingly, five of the eight runners remain maidens and so is Sakti, but she is a high-class one, having run to a first-time-out RPR of 92 when second at Leopardstown 23 days ago.
That was an excellent display from Sakti to run the more experienced Brilliant to a neck, with the winner since going close in a Listed contest and the well-beaten fourth scoring easily at Gowran Park this week to give the form a strong look.
That suspicion is backed up by the clock too as the Group 3 won by leading juvenile filly Ylang Ylang later on the card was run in virtually the same time (0.08secs quicker than the maiden).
Sakti’s capacity for improvement is clear and her debut RPR is the standout in this field, so she looks worth chancing each-way under Colin Keane with eight runners standing their ground.
