Horse Racing

2.17 Kelso - Brucio @ 13/2

The bet365 Premier Novices’ Hurdle (2.17) is a cracking race and it could go to the only mare in the line up, BRUCIO. She can take advantage of the weight she gets from the males.

The lightly raced six-year-old has quickly found her feet on her last two starts and she followed up her wide-margin win at Catterick in January with an easy win at the Dublin Racing Festival last time. She kept on strongly that day and was going away at the finish.

That was over this 2m2f trip and the stiff finish at Kelso will definitely play to Brucio’s strengths. There should be plenty of further improvement to come granted this sort of test.

She will need to progress again to land this stronger race, but is evidently going forward fast.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

Brucio @ 13/2 - 1pt win

2.50 Kelso - Bingoo @ 10/1

The £120,000 guaranteed bet365 Morebattle Hurdle (2.50) is the feature race at the Scottish Borders track and the one to be on here is BINGOO, who is unbeaten since going handicapping.

The eight-year-old won twice on soft and heavy ground at Hexham towards the end of last season and took another step forward when winning at Aintree on his seasonal reappearance.

Bingoo travelled strongly that day and cruised into the lead before going away to score by a length and three-quarters. He would have won by further but for mistakes at the last two flights and has been raised only 6lb for an ultimately easy victory. That is far from harsh.

He seems to handle any ground and remains unexposed and open to plenty of further improvement, especially as he goes well fresh and has had 67 days off since his last win.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

Bingoo @ 10/1 - 1pt win

3.25 Kelso - Monbeg Genius @ 7/4

The bet365 Premier Chase (3.25) doesn’t look like a strong race for the valuable prize and MONBEG GENIUS should prove far too good for his rivals, provided he is close to full fitness.

It’s 91 days since the eight-year-old finished third in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury and he probably has bigger targets ahead of him, but that last run is the best piece of form on offer.

Monbeg Genius did a lot wrong that day, jumping right early and making several mistakes along the way, so it’s therefore a measure of his ability that he was still able to finish just ten and a half lengths behind the winner Datsalrightgino in one of the hottest races of the season.

Trainer Jonjo O’Neill won this race with Cloth Cap in 2021 and can be trusted to have Monbeg Genius fit enough to do himself justice in a race that may not take much winning.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

Monbeg Genius @ 7/4 - 1pt win
