Bahrain Trophy odds: Ancient Wisdom top of the market

The July Festival kicks off at Newmarket on Thursday and Ancient Wisdom is the current favourite for the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy.

Ancient Wisdom

The Godolphin-owned son of Dubawi had a fantastic two-year-old campaign last season, winning four of his five starts.

They included two scores here at Newmarket, one on the July Course in novice company and then the Group 3 Autumn Stakes in October before he signed off with a decisive success in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster over a mile on heavy ground.

On his seasonal return in the Dante at York he was a bit keen early on and eventually proved powerless as Economics went clear to win for trainer William Haggas, Ancient Wisdom being forced to settle for second best.

He went off 6/1 in the Epsom Derby but was beaten by 16 lengths as City Of Troy took out the Classic.

Once again, he didn't settle early and the way he faded late on does leave him with some questions to answer now going up still further in trip, albeit in lesser company.

Aidan O'Brien has won this race twice before, with Moon Dragon in 1999 and Housesofparliament in 2016 and the Ballydoyle handler sends across this Dubawi colt now, looking to go one better than when Tower Of London was denied as odds-on favourite 12 months ago.

Tower Of London had won the King George V Cup at Leopardstown the previous month and this contender did likewise, needing every yard of the mile-and-a-half trip to overhaul Jessica Harrington's Kinesiology - who was an intended runner in this contest but who has been scratched.

Dropping back two furlongs for the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot last month didn't appear to do Portland any favours as he finished eighth and Ryan Moore's partner is a likely sort to relish this increased stamina test.

Royal Supremacy

Andrew Balding's charge was behind rival Space Legend when third in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot over a mile-and-a-half three weeks ago.

The Make Believe colt won a Sandown maiden and a Kempton handicap from three starts last year at 7f/1m and was a closing second in the bet365 Esher Cup back at Sandown (1m, good) in his comeback run in April.

Connections opted for a marked rise in trip/class for that Royal Ascot assignment last time and Royal Supremacy rewarded them with a big run, staying on for third after meeting some trouble in running.

On that evidence, he could have more to offer at this sort of trip on a less testing track as his trainer bids for a second win in this race 16 years after Donegal scored under a then-teenage William Buick.

Space Legend

Trainer William Haggas endured quite the wait between drinks in this race. Cold Marble won for him in 1988 and his second success was achieved with Al Aasy in 2020.

Space Legend brings form figures of 2122 into this renewal, making a winning turf/seasonal bow at Leicester (1m2f, soft) in maiden company in April as he scored by a wide margin.

He then went very close in the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood (1m3f, good) upped in trip/class in late May and was best-of-the-rest in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot three weeks ago, as French raider Calandagan left the field trailing in his wake.

He was up against a stout stayer there and, while he couldn't match the winner, this son of Sea The Stars kept going all the way to the line to beat the remainder and his connections may feel that this is an easier assignment on paper for the Wathnan Racing inmate.
