Ascot Stakes Odds: Zanndabad heads the betting

The Ascot Stakes is a two-and-a-half-mile test of stamina and the first of the handicaps at Royal Ascot 2024, with all-conquering trainer Willie Mullins amongst those aiming to bag the prize.

The Mullins-trained My Lyka was towards the head of the betting once final declarations were made and we're taking a look at the hopes of some of the main contenders in the Ascot Stakes.

My Lyka

Given the trainer's record of four wins in this contest since 2012, the Willie Mullins-trained My Lyka is very much one to note for the man that is now champion jumps trainer in Britain and Ireland.

The French import was a close second over hurdles Killarney on stable bow recently and has a first-time tongue-tie added now as well as the booking of Ryan Moore – who has ridden the winner of this three times for this trainer – to aid his cause.

Another French import with four wins on the level in that country. Form for this trainer has started to pick up, with two solid hurdles runs – including finishing second at this track in March – before a fast-finishing Chester Cup third last month. Strong through the line over 2m2½f on the Roodee and this trip should suit.

Pied Piper

This is a race often targeted by leading jumps trainers and so no surprise to find Gordon Elliott with a player. This Grade 2-winning hurdler was second in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket (2m2f, soft) in October on his last Flat appearance and third in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March when last spotted. Just 4lb higher than for the Newmarket effort now.

Boher Road

Irish contender arrives into this off the back of successive wins at Navan (1m5f, good to yielding) and Killarney (2m1f, soft) this spring, doing it with plenty to spare in both instances. Unexposed at this trip and should go well, with the UK handicapper assessing him 9lb higher than for his most recent win on home soil.

Got up to beat the re-opposing Temporize at Goodwood (2m, good) last month, making it 4-6 on turf in the process. Sir Mark Prescott's runner is only 4lb higher here and will be a contender if seeing out the distance.

Divine Comedy

Another last-time-out winner, scoring at Haydock (2m, soft) in May as she tackled that trip for the first time. She's been put up 9lb for his troubles but her rider takes off a handy 5lb and another that promises to see the trip out.

Regular fixture at this track for Alan King and has won here over hurdles while making the frame in 2-3 Flat appearances, including a fine third in this contest last summer. Has warmed up with two good runs on the all-weather and, now rated 5lb lower than last year, it would be foolish to discount him.

Tenerife Sunshine

Winner over 2m at Goodwood this month for Charlie Johnston, seeing off Vino Victrix after they had pulled clear. Has a 5lb penalty to carry for that win nine days ago, but is a four-year-old with scope for better things.

Kyle Of Lochalsh

Son of Highland Reel is 2-4 on turf after last month's win at Salisbury (1m6f, soft), a contest in which he powered clear after coming from last to first under Billy Loughnane. They are rated some 10lb higher now in a stronger event.

Gelded son of Sea The Stars once trained by the Gosdens, he has run well in Flat starts at Navan and Killarney of late and is not with trainer Emmet Mullins very long. Appears here on a very fair mark and with top Irish pilot Colin Keane on board for the first time.

Was behind today's rival Pledgeofallegiance at Goodwood in last month's seasonal bow but Syd Hosie's charge was an impressive winner over this sort of trip at the Glorious festival there last summer and should be sharper for that comeback. Tom Marquand an eye-catching booking in the saddle.
