The 1965 Chase and the Howden Ascot Hurdle are the feature races on Saturday's Premier Raceday at Ascot, and Racing Post's Robbie Wilders gives his best bets for the action.
14:05 Ascot - Inis Oirr @ 11/2
14:45 Ascot - Lucky Place @ 13/2
15:20 Ascot - Sans Bruit @ 4/1
14:05 Ascot - Inis Oirr @ 11/2
Inis Oirr looks the type of horse who takes a couple of runs to get going and if that is the case, he could take some stopping in the lucrative staying handicap chase at Ascot.
The fact Lucinda Russell sends him on the long journey south is interesting as she doesn’t have many runners at Ascot, and he ran much better on his two first two outings in September and October than he did at the same point of the previous campaign.
This horse has abundant stamina reserves, having bolted up by 21 lengths in the Edinburgh National last term, and it looks significant that he’s returning to this marathon trip for the first time since he fell after showing a tendency to jump right-handed in the Scottish Grand National.
After just eight chase starts, this seven-year-old is open to further progress and will be happier going this way around.
14:45 Ascot - Lucky Place @ 13/2
A trappy Ascot Hurdle can go the way of Lucky Place, who could be in for a big season for Nicky Henderson.
This horse is overpriced in relation to early favourite Golden Ace with their meeting at Taunton in January in mind. He will be 10lb better off with her for a narrow defeat and he continued to improve afterwards, giving the talented Gidleigh Park a fright on Cheltenham Trials Day before running a cracker in the Coral Cup.
Lucky Place was only getting 4lb from Langer Dan in that and that horse almost landed a Grade 1 at Aintree next time. The fact that he was only five points towards a bright future, and the performance also came at a time when Nicky Henderson’s horses were under a cloud.
15:20 Ascot - Sans Bruit @ 4/1
There is a doubt over whether the diminutive Martator can handle carrying the extra weight in the Hurst Park on a slower surface than when he bagged the corresponding race on Sodexo Gold Cup day. In any case, Sans Bruit represents a cracking alternative.
Paul Nicholls has left this horse in the Tingle Creek, which is interesting, and the expectation is he takes a good leap forward from his comeback in the Haldon Gold Cup. Plenty of the yard’s leading lights have been badly needing their returns.
The ground was fast at Exeter, and Sans Bruit’s profile suggests he loves soft terrain, so he won’t mind the forecast rain at Ascot.
We can expect a bold show with Harry Cobden taking over in the saddle.
