Hibernian rivalling Wigan in race to sign standout loanee

Hibernian are interested in signing former Plymouth Argyle midfielder Callum Wright on a free transfer.

According to reports in the Edinburgh Evening News, Hibs are "definitely interested" in bringing the 26-year-old to Easter Road after an impressive spell on loan at Wigan Athletic last season.

Wright -- recently made a free agent upon the expiry of his deal at Plymouth -- was a standout contributor with the Latics last season, being named as Wigan's Player of the Season after scoring seven goals throughout the campaign.

Hibs will now go head-to-head with Gary Caldwell's side to secure Wright's signature on a permanent basis.

"Hibs are chasing a quick second signing of the summer transfer window, with 26-year-old midfielder Callum Wright joining their list of targets. The Evening News can confirm that the Easter Road club are definitely interested in the free agent," John Greechan reported in the Edinburgh Evening News.

"The versatile former Plymouth Argyle regular spent last season on loan at Wigan Athletic, where he played alongside new Hibs recruit Jason Kerr. He was an absolute stand-out for the League One side - and swept the board at the club’s end of season awards."

Wigan are understandably keen on retaining the services of their loan star, however, the lure of not just Scottish top-flight football, but also a chance to compete in the UEFA Conference League must be a major lure.

The Edinburgh outfit will travel to either Albania or Kosovo in the second qualifying round after it was confirmed that they will play the winner of the first qualifying round tie between FK Vllaznia and FC Malisheva.

Central defender Kerr became Hibs' first signing of the summer when he put pen to paper on a two-year-deal at Easter Road. Described as a "real leader", Kerr is a former St Johnstone defender and returns to Scotland having enjoyed five seasons with Wigan.

Kerr was part of the Saints squad that lifted the Scottish Cup & League Cup double during the 2020/21 season - his last with the club before making the move south of the border.
