Hansi Flick is set to be rewarded with a contract extension following an excellent first season as manager of Barcelona.
Flick was named Barcelona manager in May 2024 and the German has revived the club's fortunes with the Blaugrana on the brink of the La Liga title having already lifted the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey.
The Catalan giants were on course for an extraordinary Treble until they were eliminated in a barnstorming UEFA Champions League semi-final against Inter.
Despite the lingering disappointment of their cruel exit, the season has still been a resounding success for Barcelona during a precarious period in which they're still grappling with severe financial challenges.
Flick's triumphant return to management is a far cry from the ignominy he suffered in September 2023 when he became the first Germany boss to be sacked since the role was created in 1926.
Transforming a fractured squad into one of Europe's most attractive teams, the Barcelona hierarchy are set to provide Flick with a one-year extension to prolong his stay until 2027, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Romano stated on X: "Flick has agreed on every detail of new deal at Barcelona valid until June 2027.
“It’s all done and set to be sealed this month with a formal signature, but already approved with contract drafts.
“Official soon. One more year for Flick at Barca.”
Barcelona downed rivals Real Madrid in a pulsating El Clasico on Sunday to move within touching distance of reclaiming their La Liga crown.
The Blaugrana fought back from 2-0 down to prevail 4-3 in a breathtaking spectacle which showcased Barcelona's remarkable attacking proficiency, but also their defensive vulnerability.
Despite being on the verge of becoming champions, Flick conceded that his team would need to improve defensively.
“I am going to have to check my heart,” the Barcelona coach said. “It would be easy to say that the tactic is to score four if they score three. We have to improve a lot defensively. When we press, it is fine. But this [can] get complicated when we make mistakes.
“It would be nice to win three titles and only need one victory now. [But] this is football. We are in a good position but you never know what can happen. We still need three points and every opponent wants to beat us.”
