The Grand National is the supreme test of a racehorse. You need to jump well and stay forever, with stamina the key to winning. There are plenty of horses with lots of that in their makeup but the one who has it in his pedigree is Mahler Mission and the longer trip will suit.

Horses by the sire, Mahler, stay forever and Mahler Mission is no slouch for speed either. He was well clear when falling at the second last in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last season and returned with a superb effort when second behind Thunder Rock at Carlisle.

That was his first run of the season, so he was entitled to need it, and he was running over an inadequate 2m4f trip. However, he was beaten only three and a half lengths by the winner Thunder Rock, who has since gone to land the Premier Chase at Kelso two weeks ago.

However, Mahler Mission has an even better effort on his ledger. That came in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury in December when he was beaten only three and three-quarter lengths into second behind the ill-fated Datsalrightgino. The front two pulled nicely clear of the rest there.

Mahler Mission has been off the track since in a bid to protect his mark for this race and trainer John McConnell is superb at target training for this race. He can get it right with Mahler Mission and the selection is fancied to give him a first Grand National winner.

Grand National - Noble Yeats @ 16/1

What is the best way to find the Grand National winner? Maybe it is just back a horse who has won the race before and last year’s hero Corach Rambler will be popular. However, Noble Yeats won it two seasons ago, is a bigger price, and is still only nine years old.

Noble Yeats is now rated significantly higher than for his first win in the race, but that’s no concern because he has developed into a genuine Grade 1 performer in the couple of intervening years and that is both over fences and hurdles. He is a really talented horse.

He proved that when making the switch from chasing to hurdling to land the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham in January from top-class stayer Paisley Park, and was far from disgraced when contesting the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. He just wasn’t quick enough.

That won’t be an achilles heel in the Grand National, where stamina is at a premium, and nothing will be finishing stronger than Noble Yeats. If he is near them at the elbow it will take a remarkable performance to hold him off, so take a chance by backing him each-way.
