It looks worth sticking with Continuous

The Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes (1.35) has gone to Aidan O'Brien for the last 11 years on the spin and he can land a remarkable 22nd victory in the race overall, but not with his most fancied runner. Instead, it's worth backing Continuous to beat Adelaide River.

Continuous has a top-class pedigree, being the only son of Japanese sire Heart's Cry at Ballydoyle, and out of a mare who is closely related to both Maybe and Saxon Warrior.

He attracted on course support before his debut in a 7f maiden at this course last month and duly delivered an impressive performance to make a successful start under Ryan Moore.

Continuous had to be nudged along to hold a position in front and looked green throughout, but he kept finding in tenacious fashion to see off allcomers and win going away at the line.

He recorded a good time for the grade that day, which is all the more creditable when you consider his inexperience, and there should be plenty of further improvement in the locker.

Emmet McNamara takes the ride and I wouldn't worry about the possibility of Continuous being second string. It's early days at Ballydoyle and most of their juveniles are untested, so it seems fair to assume that the pecking order won't be fully decided at this stage of the year.

Put your faith in Hiawatha

O'Brien can land yet another Curragh winner when he saddles the tough and progressive filly Hiawatha, who should give a good account of himself in the first ever Goffs Million (3.20).

The brother to Irish Champion Stakes winner Luxembourg evidently has the pedigree to go right to the top and it has reportedly just been greenness that has been stalling his progress. That suggests the ability is there and it's a case of connections finding a way to harness it.

He finished second on his first two starts at Killarney and Galway and O'Brien admitted after his latest win at this track that he thought Hiawatha would win his first two starts. It didn't happen and the trainer put that down to Hiawatha being too "babyish" on those outings.

The selection put his experience to good use when landing a mile maiden at this course last time. He made virtually all the running that day to score unchallenged by three-and-a-half lengths, but Ryan Moore got off afterwards and still said Hiawatha was green, so there is more to come.

The drop back to 7f is unlikely to inconvenience Hiawatha, especially as he usually goes from the front, and there is every chance he can make the step up from his latest victory.

Ground on the soft side of good should also suit Hiawatha, who was second on such a surface at Galway two starts ago, and he can make a bold bid with conditions looking in his favour.
