Goodwood, Listowel and Kempton Horse Racing Tips for Wednesday

There are five meetings in Britain and Ireland on Wednesday and it’s Kerry National day at Listowel. There is also Listed action at Goodwood, with the feature Foundation Stakes.

Wednesday's Horse Racing Betting Tips and Odds

16:05 Goodwood – Maxi King @ 18/1
16:20 Listowel – Perceval Legallois @ 7/1
16:27 Kempton – Zinchenko @ 10/1

16:05 Goodwood – Maxi King @ 18/1

The ground is going to be very testing at Goodwood for the Listed Foundation Stakes (16:05) and it will probably come down to who handles it the best.

With that being said it’s worth backing Maxi King, who is unbeaten in two starts on heavy ground and returns to his favourite surface for the first time since a wide-margin victory at Ripon in April.

Maxi King went on from that success to land a hot handicap at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting in May and proved he is worth his place in this line up with a good fourth in a Group 3 at Newbury later that month.

That race was won by the smart Middle Earth and the runner-up won twice subsequently.

The selection has failed to match that form on his last two starts and twice finished well beaten, but has switched trainers in that time and might have more to offer now that he makes his second appearance for Raphael Freire, having been moved from Dominic Ffrench Davis.

16:20 Listowel – Perceval Legallois @ 7/1

The Guinness Kerry National (16:20) is the big race of the day at Listowel and Perceval Legallois makes plenty of appeal after his eyecatching run when eighth in the Galway Plate on his last start in July.

Perceval Legallois went off 7/2 favourite that day and let down his supporters, but it was his first start following a 13-week absence and he did well to finish so close after several jumping errors cost him.

He was still finishing as well as anything on the run-in, which suggests he had running left, and he is able to race off the same mark here but might be sharper now that he has that experience behind him.

A slicker round of jumping will almost certainly be needed, but this will be only his seventh start over fences and he remains unexposed, with further improvement in the jumping department likely.

16:27 Kempton – Zinchenko @ 10/1

The 7f handicap (16:27) that opens the card at Kempton provides a good opportunity for Zinchenko to bounce back from a below-par run when joint-favourite at Lingfield last time.

The Jonny Portman-trained three-year-old was disappointing on that occasion and beat only two home, but that wasn’t a bad race and the winner has since gone on to score again.

Zinchenko wasn’t beaten far at the finish and is probably a better horse at Kempton anyway. His three best performances have come over course and distance and include a good fourth here last month.

He tried to make all the running that day and was pegged back only late on his return from a break.

There is every chance he can bounce back to his best form now that he is returning to his favourite track and Rob Hornby gets on well with the selection, having partnered Zinchenko to a good fifth over course and distance last year.
