Goodwood Cup: Date, venue, runners, history & more

The Goodwood Cup is a Group 1 stayers' race that takes place during the Glorious Goodwood Festival and is part of the British Champions Series.

The race has been won by some great stayers, with Stradivarius having made it his own as he won four in a row from 2017-2020 for John Gosden and owner Bjorn Nielsen.

Goodwood Cup date

The Goodwood Cup will take place this year on Tuesday 30th July, the first day of five at the Glorious Goodwood Festival.

Goodwood Cup venue

The Goodwood Cup takes place at Goodwood Racecourse in Sussex, England. The racecourse is situated on the picturesque South Downs, high above the south-coast town of Chichester with stunning views over the English Channel towards the Isle of Wight.

The course is right-handed and features a loop to accommodate races at 1m6f and 2m, including the Goodwood Cup.

With plenty of turns and the pronounced downhill gradient, Goodwood is essentially a sharp track that can favour prominent racers as the tricky nature of the course can lead to those held up encountering their share of traffic problems.

Goodwood Cup expected runners

Kyprios won this race in 2022 for Aidan O'Brien before missing the contest last summer. Having regained his Ascot Gold Cup crown in June, the Ballydoyle inmate is 4/6 to do likewise here.

Coltrane is an 8/1 chance for Andrew Balding while John & Thady Gosden's Gregory is 10/1 and the same stable could saddle 14/1 Sweet William. O'Brien's options also include Illinois at 10/1 and St Leger winner Continuous at 12/1.

Goodwood Cup history

The first version of the Goodwood Cup was established in 1808 and it has been run in various guises since. Since the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, it has held status as both Group 2 and Group 3 level, but since 2017 it has been installed as a Group 1 British Champions Series race, joining the Ascot Gold Cup and Doncaster Cup to form the Stayers' Triple Crown.

Goodwood Cup most successful trainer

John Scott is the most successful trainer in the history of the race, winning seven times with Hornsea (1836), Carew (1837), Charles the Twelfth (1841, 1842), Canezou (1849, 1850) and Sweetsauce (1860). In the modern era, John Gosden's tally of five wins is the standout effort, four of those coming courtesy of Stradivarius.

Goodwood Cup most successful jockey

Six jockeys have won the Goodwood Cup on five separate occasions. They are Jem Robinson and George Fordham in the 1800s, Steve Donoghue, Lester Piggott and Pat Eddery in the 1900s and Frankie Dettori, who won his first in 1999 and added four more between 2009 and 2020.

Goodwood Cup famous winners

Stradivarius penned his own chapter in Goodwood Cup folklore by winning four times on the trot from 2017 for John Gosden, with Andrea Atzeni and Frankie Dettori doing the steering.

Kyprios famously denied him a fifth win in 2022 in a pulsating renewal.

Big Orange won back-to-back Goodwood Cups for trainer Michael Bell in 2015/16, while Yeats – one of the finest stayers' in history – won the race in 2008 for Aidan O'Brien.

Persian Punch, Double Trigger, Further Flight, Le Moss and Proverb are other winners of multiple Goodwood Cups in the modern era.
